How frequently should I update my mod?
I know that it is possible to update a mod too often with too little content. What I am looking for is how often would people tolerate a mod updating.
I currently update when Minecraft updates. (approx. once a month)
I want to start updating a consistent day of the week with a few new good Items each time.
-could this become too often to update?
Pros, cons, important notes, suggestions, opinions. Thanks.

Update the mod every week or so, with new features or bug fixes, but only notify people every two or three updates, so they don't feel like they're being spammed. If it's a good mod, the updates people don't get notified about will probably be spread by word of mouth.
Have major and minor builds for your mod. The major ones are for big updates like new features and minor builds are for bug fixes that don't have to be rolled out immediately but people still have the option to download them. If you ever add a notifier for updates within your mod, I suggest it only notifies people of major build artifacts.
I'd just update when I needed to. Bug fixes, new versions, new features.
