What's Up With The Rules Here?
So as it turns out, apparently we can a lot on this website. I am not badmouthing it at all. I simply believe that it is unfair to put so many restrictions on us. I understand that the website needs rules to maintain order and stability, but I have found some rules to be a little too much. If you feel the same please comment about what you think should change. Maybe if there are enough posts we can get our ideas turned into reality by the Admins and Moderators here.

Well , When you sign up you agree to the rules and Terms of use.
If you want to stay here , Obey the rules.
If you want to stay here , Obey the rules.
You live in this house, you live by its rules. No complaining.
though, on the mojang website, they do give you the skin to start with...
Exactly why i thought it was understandable to use it as a template.
BUT they only release it so you can use it as a template to change everything on it except the empty spaces *Unless you want a bigger head or hat.* not so you can release steve with only 1 or 2 things different about him *You can however give him a suit and glasses and remove most of his regular features but you can't make him look really close to normal.*
Now for the thread:
Without rules.....there would be a bunch of crazy animals roaming the site.
Then there would be spawn fails.....
And TNT heads....

I'm genuinely proud of the community that so many people posting are satisfied with the rules, or even think they should be stricter.
I'll bet you there's a lot more who would if they saw this thread. Along with the fact that pretty much everything about the rules being good has pretty much already been said and there's no real need to repeat it.
And as for the whole Steve thing: It's as simple of this- no matter where you get permission from, no matter how legal you feel it is, no matter the circumstances- if you didn't make it ALL yourself- it's not yours, and we don't want it. I don't think you made the original Steve skin, so don't post Steves. Make your own.
EDIT: Caljoones- that's my profile pic. Stop stealing my idea D:

if anything more restrictions are needed. we still see loads of steve skins, other stolen skins/creeper skins, and lots of painterly and doku texture remixes. i've had to personally contact mods several times to get texture packs stealing my work removed.
This would be PMC without our extremely well-thought out and necessary rules:
where did you find this awesome picture??!!
EPIC
Look, Steve belongs to MOJANG, only MOJANG may distrbute it, if you need outlines get Skinedit and use that/make a blank skin and start editing from that.
If you're saying "But I saw a ton of other Steve's!" that's because you need to report, if no one reports site Moderators can't find it.

We need more restrictions not less. Derp.
more rules = more defined = less idiots = more quality content.
All of the arguments supporting the rules in nutshell.
I believe that having a large amount of rules in necessary to keep up the high standards of the site. People need these rules to stop themselves posting skins that take about 10 seconds to make and posting stolen things that have been slightly recolored. There needs to be a good amount of restrictions so that the site isn't full of skins that are almost the same.
Very Interesting Topic, I must say though, that like mentioned before, we could only prosper from more rules.
I honestly didn't think it would have this many comments but it seems they have also seen my other "illegal"(as it was said for reason of removal) creations and removed two of them dropping me another 100 XP
Whats 100 Xp when you now won't have people trolling you or anything. Your other skins are actually very good!
Thats not in total, in total i have lost over 200 XP to creations that were deleted. And that i created in Paint because i do not know any programs that are easy to understand and use.
I meant Illegal via site rules. I'm a bit tired so I feel like I'm not making much sense. What I'm trying to say is that if Steve is up for fair use, then making skins of Steve in various outfits is technically not in violation of the site rules just as posting fan art of Deviantart isn't in violation of their TOS but it's always nice to credit the original creator. Using someone else's skin from this site would be in violation unless they had permission from the original artist because the things posted here are not posted for fair use. Does that make more sense?
Content you upload here must be completely your own. Editing a part of any skin whether it be steve or anything else is not your own work. Start from scratch on a blank canvas.
^__^ If that's the rule then thats that. I hope it wasn't seen as me trying to argue the rule because I wasn't arguing against it. I'm all for it.

Pardon me if I'm not understanding this fully but doesn't Notch have Steve templates up on the actual Minecraft site for you to download and modify? Is Steve perhaps fair use then since he's available for free for the purpose of modification?
We take them and edit them for ourselves only. Not post it up on the internet and call it your own.
I understand that but, if Steve is put up for anyone to use under fair use then, although annoying and disagreeable to most, it wouldn't be illegal for someone to say, put a hoodie on him and then post him to a site. I think it WOULD be a good idea for people who do just use Steve with a slight modification to credit Mojang for the use of Steve, but the chances of that happening are slim.
its not illegal, just against the site rules, also as said before, if they let everyone make steve remixes then everyone else would think that it would be ok to remix other people skins and juts give credit, sad part is some people already assume thats the way it works and just post things like that and get flagged for it
It's not that they're restrictive, it's that this community has a focus on artistic creativity.
Recoloring or using base skins (without enough altering, of course; it IS possible to use a template or sample skin and still create something new out of it) is not creative.

The word Original cannot be used if your recolor, because it's been done so many times before.
Exactly! You're so right, ZaphodX!
Supershadowdan12 I am, however, making a steve skin mixed with a creeper but it was started form scratch rather than recoloring the original.
This is what you should be doing, making a skin from scratch instead of taking a base and changing a few things about it. Otherwise the site would be full of rampant copies that have been slightly changed.
That's because you're not really supposed to be putting Steve skins up. He was made by Mojang.
yup, they are technically unorignal in terms of our use, so therefore against the rules as said in the quote
feh,
if anything
there isn't enough restriction

What like this one? http://www.planetminecraft.com/skin/cold-steve-394488/
No i had an HD steve and he was wearing a snata hat it was extremly hard to make and now its gone.
You can't have a HD steve as all resolution is the same for skins
For instance if you look at the most recently uploaded skins here on the skins tab, i can assure you that you will find at least 2 steve skins.
Posting Steve skins is a form of plagiarism which is not allowed on this site.
They take little to no effort and can bury good skins
Allowing them to be posted opens the door to anyone's skin being taken and being altered and re posted as their own work which it is not in anyway.
Its protecting the work done by people on this site from being stolen and passed off as someone Else's, if you have this much of a problem with it, this is not the site for you.
The reason there are so many is that people constantly upload them all the time and mods cant keep on top of it.

Very true. Recoloring a steve skin isn't that hard. I did recolor a skin and post it. But it was my own skin. Steve belongs to Mojang and No-one else. I am, however, making a steve skin mixed with a creeper but it was started form scratch rather than recoloring the original.
They wouldnt have made all these restrictions if nobody broke that specific rule in the first place. Remember, every rule on this site is most likely the result of some dummy doing something stupid.
gotta agree wit this one xD
i agree with you too Rova but then the website should be able to moderate the feature that the dummy messed up and make sure no one else does it rather then let them gain massive amounts of XP then take it all away.
