I wonder what are the essential buildings in that city?
And how many different models of houses should be put so that it looks varied but without making too many models?

If you want the town to follow a certain look, you can have every other house say have a different extra room/ or an extra floor, and keep it with the same pallete. If you want alot of Variety you can change the palletes if you wish or just let your imagination run wild and improvise differnt building styles. Building is all about creativity
