The Story of Us- [Blog Contest #7]

~The mere mention of its name boasts a vast array of enticing thoughts. It spouts creativity, it spurs adventure, and encourages collaboration, teamwork, and friendship. Best yet, it gives you all the means to do so, to express you, and individualize yourself apart from a widespread community of millions. Everything from how you look, to the way you live, to what you do, to the very world you live in, everything is your own, you just have to go out there and get it, make it, create it. Whether it be an every day battle, working hard to make the most of what's around you, and fending off foes from your life come nightfall, or making your dreams come true, and taking to the sky with limitless materials to build something once thought unattainable. Whether it be an intense battle on a server, holding your own and slaying new comers and veterans alike with your superior skills and prowess, or a peaceful creation made possible only by the helping hands of aspiring architects, time well spent. No matter what you do, it takes commitment, hard work, and genuine time to reach what you want. It's this bittersweet, yet fulfilling aspect of the game that pushed me to strive to be better, both in-game, and in life.

MY STORY?

While my experience of our beloved endless sandbox game created by an even more loved Persson, who's first name is Markus, dates back to only 2013, my history with Minecraft proves to be colorful yet. Three years ago, July 16th, I was out tent camping with my buddy. At the time, we were taking turns at each other, playing every card game from blackjack to rummy. This routine kept us interested for time little over a couple dozen minutes, as such we sought a new means to delay our bedtime to an ungodly hour of the night. This thought in mind, my friend unveiled an object labeled taboo by my parents, technology. As the silver sheen of the laptop cast by the light of my lamp reflected into our eyes, we both took a moment to admire what we had before us. On a bland and boring camping trip, such a thing as that was invaluable. Letter by letter, he input his password to unlock the world before us, all the while we pondered the many things we could do to entertain ourselves for hours on end. Long before we were welcomed by the desktop, my mind was overflowing to the brim with ideas on just what we could do. Games, creepy stories, hilarious videos, action movies, all it lay before us. That is, before we made the devastating realization we lacked internet connection thirteen miles out in the countryside.

Our plans were shot to say the least. It'd only been a matter of minutes, but we were counting on that laptop being our salvation, our surefire way to elude eminent boredom. Disappointed and letdown, I reached for my bedroll and felt for my pillow. No use staying awake now, may as well sleep. My friend insisted on staying up, convinced he'd find us something to do, but I wasn't so sure. Despite being focused on rest, it seemed an eternity before I nearly dozed off. Moments away from slumber, I was shook awake, by my friend again to no surprise. Before I had the chance to open my mouth, he'd shoved the computer on my lap, and recommended I give this one game a try. By the time it was in my face, only the title,The Story of Us- [Blog Contest #7], was amidst my face when my eyes and the screen met. Never once had I ever seen these association of words, I hadn't the slightest clue as to what was before me. Taking no time, I smashed the The Story of Us- [Blog Contest #7] button and began my adventure immediately, unaware what's to come. Anything was far better than nothing, unbeknownst to me, was that mindlessly creating a new world in a game foreign to me would be an insurmountable turning point.

Selecting to make my own personal planet, quickly slapping the name "My Own World" on the screen, and plunging headfirst into a game mode called 'Survival', my first experience in Minecraft had been made. Unsurprisingly, the beginning of my adventure started like hundreds of others before me, spawning in a large body of water, drowning, kept down and out of breath due to my confusion and lack of knowledge for the controls. Fortunately for me, the friend beside me knew it was as simple as holding down the space bar and floating up to safety, swimming above water. Less fortunately, my friend was a jerk, and watched as I died. So as I sit there mashing every single letter on the keyboard trying to escape my apparent death, my health bar depleted. One heart gone, two hearts gone, three...and it continued for many more perilous moments afterwards until finally the water of the lake fully introduced itself to my lungs. Just after, a dispiriting death screen tinted in red appeared, featuring the message, "You died!" in the center of the screen, and just below it, an astonishing score of zero. The game seemed to mock me, with my character's body slightly twitching, and my health bar a heart-wrenching reminder of my demise, jamming out to the sweet sound of failure. Sadly it was my body that dropped that day, not the base.

The same screen prompted me to either respawn, or give up, and return to the title screen. While I was rather disheartened, I wasn't about to simply quit the game and pursue sleep once more. Boldly selecting to respawn, my character spawned once more, anew. With new determination, (and my friend telling me how to swim) I tried again, and made my very first steps on land, my eyes above the water. Controls afterwards were easier to grasp, walking came naturally from playing other games previously, as was moving the line of sight. Without much thought, I was moving up, down, all around in this immersive world I found myself in. Hop after hop, block by block, I reached the top of the hill, rather than the foot. It was in those few, sweet and memorizing moments when my head first peered over atop the rocks, that I really took in the simplistic, yet expansive beauty of the game. A pool of water, and a hill, that was all "Minecraft" meant to me but seconds ago. Soon as the massive forest, large mountains, ravines, and wildlife lay before me, an entirely new meaning inducted itself into my mind. The setting sun not only basked the land with sunlight, but lit up my eyes just the same.

After that. That, is when it dawned upon me:this isn't just some game. Soon after my experience, I continued as most, I built houses made of dirt, I was blown to smithereens by creepers when my back was turned, and panicked when nightfall began to come. But I also got better. But I also made progress. Houses of dirt turned to mansions of wood and wool, decorated with rare gems, defeat and death taught me how to defend myself, and better prepare. I traveled day and night alike, fearless, vanquishing anything that posed a threat. I became the master of my own world.

That's my story. Now I'm simply here sharing it. So what makes me a Minecrafter? Well, I'm confident when I say, it's us.

NOW, OUR STORY?

Each one of us is expressively different and incomprehensibly alike to one another in a way that's hard to understand. No matter what the details of our origin, whether we be cold-blooded griefers, going server to server, putting up in flames every building, or a casual survivalist, never even setting foot on a server. From a dedicated, tried and true builder, to an expertly-trained craftsman, to simple players, just playing to play, we all have a place, and we all have a story. Each one unique, each one their own. Minecraft gives us the resources to forge any story line our minds desire, and offers more than enough to fill it with rich detail. It's able to surprise, entice, and excite. Such tales Minecraft gives us the opportunity to tell are astounding, and overall stunning. A record of our experience in Minecraft is what distinguishes us from the masses, and should be something to be proud of. It's just another way we make ourselves who we are.

It's because of another I became a Minecrafter, it's because of the community I stay a Minecrafter, and it's because of people like you, who encourage, push, and help, who make my stay worthwhile. Readers like you, are why my history with Minecraft has been heightened to all-time high. Thank you.

So what makes you a Minecrafter? Being you. That's your story to tell. Here's what makes me a Minecrafter:

I cringed when I see that type of word thing where different 'good' characteristics are shown. Minecraft could've been named anything else, it's useless to use the name that way. Otherwise, good luck in the contest!

That's a good point, I just figured it could be a cool way to try and define the term, but maybe not such a good idea..? We'll see. Thanks so much for the feedback and good luck!
