I have been on PMC for a little longer than two years, but I've only recently become active. I've tried my hand at skinning, but have been amazed by how stunning some people's skins are. It's really a work of art! People like Oblivion and Fawkesy have perfected shading to a point that seems like their skins couldn't be any better. But there's a criticism I have of these skins, and it has probably been discussed before.
Essentially, amidst the amazingness of top skins, there's a problem: they're all the same type. They all look fantastic, but they're essentially all alike: teen white girls.
There's rarely any racial variation between top skinners' uploads. I've scrolled through several top skinners' list of submissions, and I only occasionally found a skin without white skin. They all look quite similar because they're supposed to be the same age; they're all teenagers. It makes sense, though, that teenage skinners would be creating skins relevant to their age. But why do they all have to be white? Skins with Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, or African ethnicity could look just as beautiful as skins of Caucasian race.
The most noticeable similarity between the tops skins is that, well, they're all girls. Top submissions are most commonly not male skins. But why does this stay constant? Male skins can look just as cutesy as female skins if done right. They'd still be an amazing work of art, just themed after a different gender.
This really isn't a demand for change, just an acknowledgement of the fact that top skins follow a stereotypical model. The skins themselves are incredible just like their creators, but it's worth noting the lack of variation. Anyways, thanks for reading!
