I have been on PMC for a little longer than two years, but I've only recently become active. I've tried my hand at skinning, but have been amazed by how stunning some people's skins are. It's really a work of art! People like Oblivion and Fawkesy have perfected shading to a point that seems like their skins couldn't be any better. But there's a criticism I have of these skins, and it has probably been discussed before.

Essentially, amidst the amazingness of top skins, there's a problem: they're all the same type. They all look fantastic, but they're essentially all alike: teen white girls.

There's rarely any racial variation between top skinners' uploads. I've scrolled through several top skinners' list of submissions, and I only occasionally found a skin without white skin. They all look quite similar because they're supposed to be the same age; they're all teenagers. It makes sense, though, that teenage skinners would be creating skins relevant to their age. But why do they all have to be white? Skins with Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, or African ethnicity could look just as beautiful as skins of Caucasian race.

The most noticeable similarity between the tops skins is that, well, they're all girls. Top submissions are most commonly not male skins. But why does this stay constant? Male skins can look just as cutesy as female skins if done right. They'd still be an amazing work of art, just themed after a different gender.

This really isn't a demand for change, just an acknowledgement of the fact that top skins follow a stereotypical model. The skins themselves are incredible just like their creators, but it's worth noting the lack of variation. Anyways, thanks for reading!

Take a peek at the skinners who aren't in the teen skin demographic, and you'll find what you're looking for.

Well, that's not my point. There are plenty of skinners who have variation in their uploads. But it's the top skins that are all the same.

Well, to be fair, I was referring to the top skinners who aren't teen skinners, though I didn't make that very clear, sorry.

This just about sums up what I see in and think about the PMC skin database.
The reaction can be summed up by: headbanging the desk.

I agree so much with this, I sadly have made "white girl" skins too often and I am fed up of making them just to please others. I want to make skins that make me feel proud of them and thanks to this, I will be working on more skins that have variety.

Well said, and I completely agree. Although I am a 'teen girl' skinner myself, I do agree that there needs to be more racial variation, especially. I think it's a matter of making skins similar to yourself (for example, I am a white, teenage, girl so I generally make skins as such). Also, darker skin tends to be harder to shade and pull off in a skin, although I hope to post at least a few in the future. As for male and female skins, many teen skinners tend to be girls, and they therefore want to make female skins. Also, some male skinners are simply more comfortable making girl skins. I find it hard to make a male skin, because I've only practiced female skins, but there are a lot of really good male skins out there already.
Very good points! This has inspired me to make a few other types of skins x3

Thanks! This was what I was figuring - a lot of top skinners are teenage girls, thus meaning that they create skins of what they're most familiar with. And the dark skin thing makes sense too.

Glad to have inspired you! c:
