Many may describe Minecraft servers in the past to be dedicated, cooperative, and challenging. Before Bukkit released, Minecraft servers were solely dedicated to pure survival. Many servers at the time were, as we now refer to it, an SMP. Players would log on to a server with one goal and one goal only, to survive. These players would also cooperate and team up with other players to face the infinitely generated world together. There weren't a wide variety of servers like there are now. Many players became dedicated to one or two servers. Thus, creating a community. All in all, servers were more simple, friendly, and faithful to the true aspects of Minecraft online gameplay.

While taking a look at server lists, you may notice that servers with multiple gamemodes, donator perks, and expensive hosting  are the top of the list. Servers are all about competition now. On these popular servers you may notice that there isn't much of a community. Servers such as HiveMC focus merely on fast paced minigames rather than player interaction. Many today are play2win, which ruins the experience for many players. There is a good side to these servers, though. They may be fast-paced or may not have that strong of a community, but they do provide a joyful and fulfilling experience for almost any player. If minigames aren't a player's cup of tea, there are many SMPs that they may apply for. These SMPs allow for players to escape the havoc and take a step back in time to the good ol' days of pure vanilla play. Minecraft servers today may be uber-automated, but they are still able to provide a great experience for players of any age.

Where will Minecraft servers end up a few months/years from now? This is solely based on your opinion. I believe that Minecraft servers will always continue to venture into more complex yet fun enviroments. Improvements will constantly be made to servers all around the world. Or maybe servers will die off and everyone will head back to singeplayer. Maybe servers will create communities as large as a city! These are all possibilities of the future of Minecraft servers. I see a bright future ahead of us.

What Do You Think Minecraft Servers Will Be In The Future?

omg soo true tho, i try to find a place where it's not that small of a community but a nice one and we could all get to know each other. it would be really fun, but hey. Dwarves vs. Zombies is really fun but small too.

I'm glad people are creating new blogs about this issue. I hope server owners understand what makes a good server and stop making mistakes by creating unoriginal servers with the same content over and over.

Past servers really seem great, I can't stand the minigame nonsense of present servers. But then again, there are nice unique gamemodes to them and creative ideas. However, many servers nowadays are a threat to the original purpose of minecraft survival. :/

In the future, I also really hope the faction PVP trend goes off.
