Ok, just to let you know. I PLAYED the original Rogue. Yes, I've been alive THAT LONG. It infuriated me (and addicted me) back then. Still tends to do it today.
Magicite is an early access game available on Steam, coded by a guy named Sean Young. It's a procedurally generated dungeon world in utterly cute 8-bit. The gameplay is simple (move right/left, jump, whack things.) The fun stuff is when you get to start crafting items. You can cut down trees (I'm a lumberjack!) mine for ore and collect monster hides and pelts. You get to discover the crafting recipes on your own. (Or, if you're lame, like me, you eventually give up and check the wiki.) As you level up, you learn new skills in one of three diciplines, fighter, magic user or ranger. The more you play, the more character types you can unlock.
Did I mention the hats? You get to unlock hats!
Oh, right... it's ALSO multiplayer! So, while playing solo, you have to struggle with permadeath, (NOOOOOOO, my STUFF!) In multiplayer, you can have friends revive you, which is darned handy when the SCOURGE comes to kick your butt!
There is actually a lot of depth to this game, which you wouldn't really suspect from looking at the opening screens. The humour is my kind of humour ... (sort of dark and goofy, all at the same time.)
As I mentioned before, available on Steam, you can get it here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/268750/ for $9.99. If you get it, let me know, I wanna try multiplayer!
Edit: I just died in my longest solo game so far, 53 minutes. It was pretty epic, right up until I got flanked by 2 brood mothers. I hate spiders.

Psssst #2: thank you for the edit. Reviews of games are quite permissible in the blogs. I should know. I'm a moderator. :P
