Hello! This is my entry for the blog contest! I hope you enjoy!
*I will add pictures and better presentation in the future.*

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello.

I don’t know who else will read this, or if there even is someone other than me in this pitiful excuse of a world, but hello. My name is Steve. I would ask for your name, but it would be rather futile as I will be long dead before this book is touched again. Anyways, to the point. I am writing this book to teach you that even though the world may seem very pretty, teeming with harmless life and rolling hills, it’s actually a facade thought up by the cruel deities that took the time to conjure up this world. I am here to teach you where not to step, what not to eat, and what to stay away from.

If you are here reading this, which you obviously are because you just read that sentence, you would have fallen into the same hole I did. You made the same, stupid mistake that I did that got me here and made me write this book, and ultimately got me killed. Was it a bad thing that I fell down here and my endless cycle of excitement that I liked to call my life was ended? Maybe,  but that’s for you to decide.

You are most likely in the same cave that I fell in, and unless someone else brought it out and you are reading it on the surface, then you might need help getting out. The rocks in this cave have a very brittle tenacity and break on the first sign of pressure, so climbing is not an option. Your best bet of getting out of here is clawing away at the rocks with your hands. I'm much too old for my efforts at clawing to make a difference, but I suggest you start before you continue in this book. Go on, now....
I said GO!

Now I'm going to start spilling my words of wisdom into your cerebral cortex so that you don't make all of the stupid mistakes I made all over again. Be sure to listen closely, and take these words to heart. I'm an old man, I've probably been venturing these lands for something like 50 years now. Maybe you're 50 also. Who knows. Maybe I'm talking to myself. Maybe my words are echoing through an empty crowd.

One of the most important things to remember is not to get lonely. The pain and suffering that you must endure to go on through this meandering existence of pointlessness is unbearable have you no companion. Your mind will start to not work correctly. You will go insane, and start talking to yourself. So, what you must do is find a dog. You may know them as wolves, coyotes, hounds, but ultimately, they are dogs. You go up to them with a bone. Now, you may be thinking, “Where do I get a bone?”. All you have to do is wait until it’s night time and all the creepy crawlies come out, and kill one of those living skeletons that walk around and don’t stop shooting you. They have plenty of bones for you to use. Now that you have a bone, go up to one of those dogs mentioned earlier, and just feed the bone to him/her. This will make them miraculously become your loyal companion.

I have come to find out I need to spend less time on each topic. It has been only 6 hours, and I am already becoming very hungry. Dang, I should have spent more time learning to read. Anyways, the next topic I’d like to talk about is food. Food is one of the most precious resources there is. You run out of energy in a few hours, and running can half that time. In all honestly, I’m a bit of a chunky guy, so if you want to learn how to be set on food, listen to me. So, there are villages scattered around the world. They look like they were built by someone similar to you and me, right? Wrong. The creatures that inhabit those places are mindless beings that live aimlessly, tending their gardens of carrots, potatoes, and wheat that they seemingly don’t even touch. You can take their wheat, and what is in their chests without hesitation. The only thing you must worry about are the iron golems that protect their villages. They will kill you with no signs of guilt. That is why you must destroy them as sacrifices to me. When I was an inexperienced person, much like yourself I presume, I always thought that I shouldn’t steal from these odd beings, because no matter what they are, they worked for what they have. This is wrong. No matter how long I watched them, the only thing they do is walk in and out of their homes. They spend no time harvesting their gardens, or mining for ores, or even eating. It makes me question whether or not these beings are even living. They feel no emotions. They don’t hear, even though they have ears. They don’t see, even though they have eyes.  You should take what you can from their gardens and their living quarters, because they obviously weren’t the ones who put it all there.

Any cows you see should be killed. Any pigs or sheep should be killed, also. Cows provide a rather large amount of raw beef, which can later be cooked in a furnace to provide steak, and they also provide leather, used for crafting leather armor, which is barely ample for survival amongst the denizens of the dark night. Pigs are used for meat just as cows are, and sheep are used for obtaining wool. Wool is used to make a bed, needed for sleeping away the harsher part of the sun cycle, the night.

One thing you don’t want to eat, though, are the slimy chunks of rotten flesh the fall off of the rotten corpses of the once alive zombies that roam the nights. It might seem like a good idea to fill your stomach with this nasty substance when you are almost starving to death, but you are sadly mistaken. This flesh will give you salmonella on consumption, and that makes you die of starvation even faster.

It has been almost 12 hours now, and my hand is starting to shake while merely holding up this quill. I feel as if I’m not all me anymore, like I’m fading away. I can feel myself go weak at some points, and I find things that I didn’t write in this book. I really should have brought more food with me. This just goes to show you that you should always be prepared for anything when exploring, be it getting stuck in a cave, or breaking your pickaxe, or running out of food. Always bring double or triple the amount of food you think you need,  because you never know what will happen.

Now I am going to talk about resources. When I say resources, I mean crafting materials, blocks, and others of that sort. The most important is Wood. You need to have a surplus of wood on you at all times. The dark will save you from this nothingness.  One slot in your backpack should be enough. You can make tools to survive, tools to gain ores, and tools to get more wood. It’s overall very important to have and is a very versatile material if you are experienced with crafting.

Stone is very important also, and is used to make better tools than wood, you don’t need it as much though. What you need it for mostly is to obtain iron ore, which can be smelted into iron. Iron is used to make tools, what a surprise, but unlike the other materials, it is used to make armor, which is much stronger than leather. Gold is useless. You might be able to pawn it off to some villagers if you’re lucky. Lastly, diamonds. Diamonds are the hardest substance in this world, besides bedrock,  of course. Diamonds are used to make the most useful and efficient tools and armor out there.

It has been over a day, and I am at 1 heart. I am unable to keep writing in this journal, because I can’t concentrate. My mind is being clouded by the dark. I really hope you will put my words to good use, but hey, these are just words of an old man named Steve. Good luck, my fellow traveler, may your fortunes be greater than mine.

Please Diamond and all that jazz.

This is very well written.  I like that you took this in a more narrative direction than most of the other entries.  Good job!  ;)
