I have noticed that alot of servers being posted are still 1.7.9/1.7.10 and when I ask I get a response somewhere around "1.8 is not out yet."

I will tell you that it is, you just have to look for it. Many of you are familiar with "Bukkit." Last I have checked, Bukkit is not yet updated to 1.8 due to legal issues. However, Spigot (Very similar to Bukkit but with better performance improvements) has been updated. This is a tutorial on how to get spigot.

------------------------------------

Most of you are used to just having a download link to get bukkit (or spigot previously). However the only way to get the updated version is to compile it youself.

UPDATED!

Many of you may not want to go through the steps on creating it yourself so I have provided a download link for the one I compiled myself that is the current version here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/gllehzen4m2d25s/spigot.jar

BUKKIT!

Important!

A few commonly used plugins (Essentials, WorldGuard, PermissionsEx) are broken. They have been fixed and you can find the downloads for these plugins here: https://hub.spigotmc.org/jenkins/

You will need to replace your current plugin jars with the corresponding ones provided in the link.

----------------------------------

If you want to make it yourself there is an easy video tutorial I made on top, however you can also continue reading to get the written instructions.

If the video does not appear you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT3IhLbH4aI

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First thing you need to do is go to the spigot site in order to install 2 programs (one of which you may or may not have already)
-------> http://www.spigotmc.org/threads/bukkit-craftbukkit-spigot-1-8.36598/

Scroll down to "Windows Prerequisites" and install both programs listed there. (Both of them are safe to install. You can scan then if you want before installation)

You need to download BuiltTools.jar which can be found here:
-------> https://hub.spigotmc.org/jenkins/job/BuildTools/lastSuccessfulBuild/artifact/target/BuildTools.jar

Place BuildTools.jar on your Desktop

After installing Git for Windows go into your Windows start menu -> All Programs -> Git -> Git Bash
Now you need to change the location to where BuildTools.jar is. In this case (if you followed directions), type into the terminal: cd Desktop

Below are the commands you have to manually type in order to start compiling it. Type the corresponding command into the terminal and hit Enter. You can find what bit your Windows is by going to: Start -> Right click Computer -> Properties -> (look for bit # under "System type:"
  1. 32 bit Windows: JAVA_HOME="C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.8.0_25" java -jar BuildTools.jar
  2. 64 bit Windows: JAVA_HOME="C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_25" java -jar BuildTools.jar
  3. Linux: java -jar BuildTools.jar

After about 10 minutes or less it should be finished (you will know). You can close out of the terminal. There should be multiple folders on your desktop. You only need the folder called "Spigot". Delete the others.

Open the Spigot folder. In the search bar top right do a search for "spigot." A file that is around 18.5mb called "Spigot-1.8-R0.1-SNAPSHOT" should appear. Move this onto your desktop.

The next part is necessary if you want to have Essentials, PermissionsEx, and WorldGuard working.
Those common plugins are currently broken with Spigot and there have been fixes. You will need to replace your current plugin jars with the corresponding plugins here: https://hub.spigotmc.org/jenkins/

You are done.

This is the server jar file you should be used to now. If you have run bukkit previously, you will need to change the name of the file you have set in your start script to the name of this new file. (So that it will find it)

I have tried to make this tutorial as simple and straight forward as I could. I hoped this helped and have a great day!
