Everybody has their own role in contributing towards the success of a community, whether it's moderating it and keeping the community clean, or if it's contributing to conversations to expand people's thoughts towards one thing or another. You'd be surprised on the variety of things you can do to keep a community well.

Talking in Chat

By simply talking in chat, you can make the community better. You can get somebody to think a way that they didn't first think, whether this is persuading somebody that a class isn't overpowered on a PvP server or if it's convincing the owner to add a new plugin to make the server better. Creating a new conversation and chatting is also generally a good thing, but then there's always that "one guy" who spams or just puts everybody in a bad mood with what he/she says. Server chat can be what makes the community great; it can also be what makes it terrible. Often, there are people who are dedicated to a server in chat who brighten people's days and are generally good people (by the looks of it). But even more often than that, there are people who deliberately try to make people feel worse, or to ruin their time on the server. While they can have their own reasons, (being bullied at school, let's say), it's still the wrong thing to do. While you can easily mute these people, you can often find that they have multiple alts and it just creates a huge mess on the server. In result, people leave. Though we're straying from the main point here, what I'm trying to get across is that being nice and informative in chat can be what makes a server great, (community-wise), but having trolls and flamers can be what makes the server's community bad.

Moderation

Moderating the chat or the server itself can be the most important thing on a server. If the server isn't well protected, then make sure the players on the server are used to hackers and spammers as well as griefers and robbers. Having good staff members keeps the community clean, and having bad ones makes the community one where half of the players make the opacity of the chat 0% in the multiplayer settings. Staff members that don't do a job should be demoted, because moderation keeps servers from being spammed, flamed, or even hacked. Staff members are also often used as a measurement of the quality of servers. Given briefly, people often say, "if there's good staff, it's a good server. Bad staff, it's a bad server." While this often isn't entirely true, it still contributes to the overall success of a Minecraft Server.

The Owner's Decisions

The owner, in a way, decides whether the server will be good or not. They decide who the staff members will be, if there will be any. They have the final say in adding plugins. They have the final say in the design of forums. They have the final say in just about everything that matters- if they make one bad decision, it affects each person on the server, whether it's having a new member become staff or banning a player. One way or another, directly or indirectly, this affects each member. If the owner doesn't contribute to the server, then more often than not, nobody will. Everything that the owner does with the server will affect someone in some way. For example, let's say the owner banned somebody for hacking when really, they were innocent. The user creates a ban appeal, where it is denied. The player is obviously going to be mad at the owner, and, in result, the player's friend starts spamming the server and causing problems. The owner bans him too. On comes his alt, also banned. Another. And another. This can be a huge problem, causing members of the server to leave and possibly comment on the server page that it's bad. I've experienced many servers where the owner didn't do a good job with taking care of the server, but the staff members were great. Even with majority of the staff being experienced, helpful and good in general, the server had tons of problems because of the decisions that the owner made. I often find good servers by checking the work that the owner's done, whether it's that they created a whole new custom plugin for the server, or if they built an amazing spawn. If anything that they do shows clear dedication, I generally stay on the server a lot longer than I would if there was no direct work put into it.

Default Players

Default players have more of a role in the overall success of Minecraft Servers than you'd think. Yes, staff members do have more of a load on their shoulders, but default players are often the ones who give the owner new ideas for the server, and are more often than not the most active in chat. The reason for this could be that staff members are testing something for the owner or something along the lines of that. Default players also give encouragement to staff members, which can keep them doing their best with high morale. For example, on Minecraft Servers, I often find default players kissing up to staff members a bit. This actually contributes to the server because while the default players kiss up, they say good things about the staff member which then encourages the staff member to do even better. Default players also populate the server. They contribute to it by just making houses and chatting. The houses make the server populated, and at times, when servers have certain plugins, (like Towny), default players can create towns for newer players to live in. This often convinces the new players to stay on the server, and the owner of the town both benefitted him/herself and the server.

Contribution Itself

Some people have the wrong definition of "contribute". They think of it the wrong way, as if only staff members can contribute to the server in a good way. At times this is true, but it's only in certain situations, such as banning a player. Default members of the server can't help with that at all, unless they report the player who they think should get banned. New members of servers help contribute more than people initially think, because they don't see the little things the members do. Little or not, it still helps the server. I find myself wanting to leave a server often if I see no houses in sight. It makes it seem like the server is a "wasteland," and I prefer having multiple people to talk to or have multiple people neighboring my own house.

Great blog! The only bad thing is that you should add a little more paragraphs because its a bit hard reading walls of text.
