Not Dead Yet Pt. 1 - Diiby
The West Wall had been overrun and we were now retreating to the center of the base, fighting as we ran. I’d lost sight of Clay in all the commotion and wasn’t sure if he made it away from the wall. Centurion Toast arrived with several hundred troops as reinforcements from The Luminous Gang, but they weren’t able to reach us and were fighting on the East Wall. I heard a yell behind me and stopped running to see a soldier pinned against a wall by an Astral Beast Bruiser, his rifle on the ground next to him. I ran back and unsheathed my rapier, stabbing it into the beast’s side. It screeched and turned, knocking me onto my back with its arm. It reared back to swipe its claws at me and quickly I grabbed my rifle, shooting it in the neck. It fell back onto its side and immediately stopped breathing. I retrieved my rapier and looked at the soldier, who was picking up his rifle.
“Bullets are your life soldier, remember that.”
He nodded, then ran after the others. The center of the District was surrounded by a smaller wall that, if we reached, would allow us to regroup. I could see the gate up ahead, still open but likely not for long. I looked back one more time, just hoping to see Clay. Nothing. I couldn’t wait, if he was gone then I was the troops only leader.
“Good luck Clay…” I whispered before running after the other soldiers.
The guards at the gate were waving us on, knowing they’d have to close the gates if we didn’t make it in time. I sprinted as fast as I could. I could almost hear the Astral Beasts breathing behind me, but I didn’t dare turn around to see. I saw a Beast smash into an oil tank just twenty feet to my right. It caught fire immediately and, within a few seconds, it blew. The shockwave knocked me to the side and deafened me. I tried to stand but was too dazed. Everything was spinning as the soldiers ran by. I could hear the Astral Beasts roaring but couldn’t run away, it was chaos. Slowly I composed myself, but where were the Beasts? I was a sitting duck and hadn’t been touched. I looked around, still only on my knees. Then I saw what was stopping them.
About a hundred feet away from me, towards the overrun wall, was a singular soldier, fighting five beasts. They couldn’t seem to touch him. He stopped them with a spear in his right hand, then brought a sword down on their heads, unharmed, then repeated. But he also wore a uniform, not like the Legion’s. It was armor, but all white. Nothing but white. It stood out among the dark Astral forms and black and red uniforms of my men.
He swung at the last one near him, decapitating it. I watched, still unable to move, as he turned to face me. Then I truly couldn’t move. White eyes, glowing, staring, penetrating. I became dizzy as the world spun around me. I couldn’t make out anything other than the silhouette of the all white figure. He didn’t move, unflinching. I tried to turn away, but my eyes were locked for some reason. Suddenly, the eyes turned away, likely to fight more beasts. Still dizzy, I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“Diiby!!”
I looked up and saw Clay standing next to me.
“C’mon, we have to go!”
“Clay… Clay what was that?”
“Come on!”
He lifted me up and I ran, without even thinking. I ran from the beasts, from the eyes, from the collapsing fort, the flames, I didn’t know, I just knew to run. The gate began to close when we were just fifty feet from it, or seventy, I had no clue. I just continued following Clay towards the entrance. We made it inside, and I heard the gate shut behind us with beasts pounding on the outside. I slowly stopped running as I regained my senses, then looked around the large room. Hundreds of men, injured, dead, and unharmed, were inside. Most were either being attended to by medics or running to find ammo.
I tried to yell for Clay but it turned into a cough, and I leaned against a wall to catch my breath.
“CLAY!!!”
He ran over to me, just as out of breath as me.
“Burn it.” I said between breaths. “Burn it all.”
He nodded and ran away, and I forced myself to limp over towards the gate.
“Hold the gate!!!”
Not Dead Yet Pt. 2 - Clay
I ran into the command center, where soldiers were frantically running around, behind computers, and on radios calling for help. I started walking towards Battlemaster Afap who noticed me and ran to meet me.
“Sir, I’ve ordered a lockdown of the West side, but the beasts are spreading to the Southern side. Do I order a retreat?”
“No, call in the Hail-Fires, now!”
“How many sir?”
“All of them.”
“Yes sir!”
He flipped a switch on the radio and spoke. “Launch all Hail-Fires, West side.”
Just a minute later we watched as over 30 missiles flew overhead and over to the West side. They passed just two hundred feet over it and then combusted midair, all at once, causing fire to fall like rain over the entire half-mile radius. The screeches of Astral Beasts were almost audible from where we stood.
The remaining beasts scattered, leaving through the decimated wall they entered from. Several turrets fired at them as they ran, but it didn’t matter, they were gone, we had won. I pulled out my phone and called Diiby.
“It worked! We won.”
He was silent, and for a second I thought He hung up, then He spoke. Softly and quietly He said: “No… we just survived.”
Oh man, I'll be honest... this one is pretty dope lol. And a two parter.
