History of the Alessian Commonality

Forged from the ashes of the now deposed Grand Octavian Empire, the Alessian Commonality was originally a band of small independent nation-states of the Southern Isles. When the Octavians assimilated themselves into the indigenous ethnic population of the Isles, they brought with them pen and paper. With the ability to record their history in a written language, the ethnic Alessians were able to quickly advance their shamanic practices into a more developed arcane science. Being able to refine their practices proved however to be the downfall of the Grand Octavian Empire. Such knowledge brought with it its own dangers, not least of which was raw Balefire magic. In attempting to develop Balefire into an effective deployable weapon, Octavian engineers inadvertently destroyed much of the core of their Empire in what is considered to be the single most powerful non-nuclear explosion in Terran history. To this day, the seat of the Grand Octavian Empire is merely a flat landscape of granite rubble where once was a technologically advanced civilization, stretching for thousands of miles around.
The ethnic Alessian people sought not to repeat the mistakes of their Octavian counterparts and ceased development of weaponized Balefire for six centuries.
During this technological plateau, the Skylords and Iyecte were finding their feet far to the north. It is interesting to note that neither of these civilizations crossed paths until recently, and it is easy to speculate how technology would have developed had they come across one another.
When the Alessians finally did emerge from their induced Dark Age of development, they did so in quite a fashion. The very first that the Skylords knew about them (for at this point Iyecte had returned to the overworld and once again was part of the UTS) was through detection of what appeared to be an extremely high-yield non-nuclear detonation. The Alessians, now governed by Dominic Gestalt and formally the Alessian Commonality, took up the dangers of Balefire once again and successfully mastered its use. With access to a potent energy soruce, electricity soon became widespread throughout the Commonality. With electricity came the first Alessian Aerial Warships, blending graceful lines reminiscent of Octavian culture with the technological advances of Alessian Balefire.
In the years of Dominic’s rule, the Alessian Commonality forged successful trade agreements with the UTS and came into possession of modern medical and agricultural processes.
Today, the Commonality is ruled by the grand-daughter of Dominic, Empress Carolyne II. Under her charismatic leadership, the Commonality has launched a fleet of effective aerial warships and has grown to be the superpower of the Southern Isles. Lessons of the past have not been forgotten, and the dangers of Balefire technology are still fully recognised. With a very cautious political agenda, Carolyne has begun a campaign to prevent the spread of Balefire to Nations that cannot appreciate the potency of such arcane technology. This has led to an enforced non-aggression policy whereby the Alessian Commonality will not fight alongside any Nation, but shall willingly provide humanitarian aid and asylum to any nation seeking it. It is yet to be seen how such a pacifist agenda will affect relationships with each of the Nations. Sitting on Balefire arcano-tech and preventing its spread to other nations is a very wise course of action in the current political upheaval. While frequently stressing their neutrality, the Alessian Commonality still possesses perhaps the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in existence. It is known that other nations are attempting to develop countermeasures for this technology, but are yet to have proven successful.

Airships of the RAEF Fleet

The modern RAEF Fleet is considered a second-rate Fleet by contemporary standards. It serves as an in-atmosphere fleet without the means to affect space travel. However, it is considered by modern standards to be a very effective in-atmosphere fleet, a capability many contemporary fleets lack.

Based around only four main classes of aerial warship, the RAEF Fleet serves as the rearguard of the Allied Terran Nations. In the event that Earth is attacked by hostile forces, the RAEF will form the backbone of the defence of Earth. For this purpose, two new classes of aerial warship are being developed that will effectively counteract all known potentially hostile Fleets.

The RAEF is currently undergoing a complete realignment of aerial warships, with older classes being phased out and new vessels taking their place. By 2016AD Standard Earth Years, the RAEF Fleet will comprise of the following aerial warship classes and numbers per class:
Amity-Class Corvette : Twenty-Eight vessels in four batches of seven
Awesome-Class Frigate : Sixteen vessels in four batches of four
Unity-Class Destroyer : Twelve vessles in four batches of three
Arete-Class Cruiser : Four vessels, all currently in commission

In addition, the following single-ship classes are in commission or will be in commission by 2016AD Standard Earth Years:
Alessia-Class Royal Command Yacht : One vessel, currently in commission
Raider-Class Dreadnought : Two vessels, under construction
Highlander-Class Super Dreadnought : One vessel, ready for construction

Operationally, the RAEF deploys its forces in the following Patrol Groups and Battle Groups:
Patrol Group 1: Seven Amity-Class Corvettes
Patrol Groups Two: Seven Amity-Class Corvettes
Battle Group One: Four Awesome-Class Frigates, Four Unity-Class Destroyers, One Arête-Class Cruiser
Battle Group Two: Four Awesome-Class Frigates, Four Unity-Class Destroyers, One Arête-Class Cruiser
Battle Group Three: Four Awesome-Class Frigates, Four Unity-Class Destroyers, One Arête-Class Cruiser
Command Group: Four Awesome-Class Frigates, One Arête-Class Cruiser, One Alessia-Class Royal Command Yacht

Upon commission of both Raider-Class Dreadnoughts and the Highlander-Class Super Dreadnought, these vessels will be assigned each to a Battle Group and as flagship of their respective Battle Groups.

Technology of the RAEF

WEAPONS:
- Arcano-Tech Balefire: While not in and of itself a weapon, Balefire can be weaponized into a super-condensed bomb. Due to its inherent instability, transporting Balefire in this form is a very dangerous process. This has limited its use as a forefront weapon but Balefire remains the most potent weapon in service with the RAEF
- Rapid Fire Quad-Cannon: Utilizing standard TNT microcannons, the RAEF often mounts them in banks of four known as Quad-Cannons, each linked to an automatic circuit. While of limited use against shielded targets, Quad-Cannons rank among the most devastating weapons that can defeat all standard solid armour in common use.
- Mounted Beam Cannon: Only used onboard the Raider-Class Dreadnugget and the Highlander-Class Super Dreadnugget, a Beam Cannon delivers a constant beam of hypervelocity fire charges imbued with Balefire. Considered extremely dangerous, the Beam Cannon is only used against heavily shielded targets. Known issues include a lagstorm that affects all nearby redstone systems.

DEFENCES:
- Regenerating Projected Shields: Effectively based around projecting a wall of glass to outside a ship, the Regenerating Projected Shield is capable of repairing itself whenever it takes damage. While a single standard explosion will tear through it with ease, the rate at which it repairs is often enough to seal the wall in time for the next shot.
-TNT Deflection Shield: Being mounted along the sides of each hull, the Deflection Shield is an Iyectan development that has been adapted by the RAEF for use aboard its aerial warships. While unable to defend against every conceivable threat, and suffering from power supply problems, the Deflection Shield is easily mounted and requires little space for operation, making it a mainstay of RAEF defences.
-Fax Shields: A simple concept that teleports away entities of a give type to r=Y that approach within r=X. It does not outright destroy approaching entities or remove their velocity, but it prevents most entities from ever hitting the surface of the shielded vessel. Extremely versatile and can be modified for any type of entity.

I will, once I update my lore and finish a couple of builds. I'm not dead. Life has just been busy.

Did you here the Alessians now have space-faring capability?

Iyecte, I deleted your comment... my bad...

But in response to what you said: "I don't see the point of setting out your deployed groups so rigidly" my only reply is as follows: I know exactly what tech I need within each battle group. this system gives me the most versatile spread of technology that is appropriate to have in place.

but doesn't that leave you too inflexible?

I don't see anything tactically wrong with having all of your ships organized into battle groups.  It means every time an enemy tries to engage, they're fighting a carefully constructed fleet that may be rigid in structure, but doesn't necessarily have to use the same combat strategies over and over again.  It beats having single ships flung all over the galaxy.

It's a case of diversity vs versatility. I've planned for redundancy on all my vessels. Size affects armament more than anything else. My defenses will be according to space. That means I'll have room of at least two tiers of shielding on each vessel. With that sort of blanketing over any of my deployed groups, they will survive so long as they keep their shields active.

Teamwork is the byword of the Commonality. Not only within its own deployed groups, but among its allies too.
