That gold would not break. Grunting in frustration, Steve raised his pickaxe over his head for one last blow…
…and instead impaled the back end of his pickaxe into the head of the attacking zombie! Steve yelped, surprised. The zombie staggered backwards, taking the pickaxe with it. Steve glanced toward his ladder and found it missing! The two monsters must've broken it, so he couldn’t escape. Steve was out of options.
The zombie kept staggering back. He ran right over the far ledge of the cave and straight into the lava lake. So much for him. And the pickaxe, too. Steve felt unduly irritated. He’d used valuable iron on that tool.
Now he only faced the spider, but Steve was unarmed. Could he jump onto its back and kill it that way? That was too risky.
The spider lunged, and Steve jumped back – straight into the block of gold ore.
It was webbed with cracks from Steve’s chopping. All it needed was one more whack to split. And Steve gave it that whack. On impact, the block split into a thousand tiny chunks of gold. It was dazzling; nuggets of metal flew everywhere. The spider was transfixed.
Steve looked away from the dazzling ore fountain. He’d sacrificed his gold, and now he was safe. Steve turned tail and ran away as fast as he could.
