Art blogs! I love them. A lot of people who are more active in
the community will have posted an art blog, and I must admit i personally love
this. I love art as in i love how creative people can get and how much effort
people can spend on each drawing and the unique aspects of each person!

However there’s always that small issue in every category in PMC. And I believe
that tracing and pop reels are a big problem in the art blog section.

Tracing of other peoples art in submissions

Now before you rip my head off, I know PMC has mostly a younger player base,
and i know people are learning to draw. And not everyone’s going to post
fabtabulous blogs of wonder, and that’s not my point here. When it comes to
looking at new Art blogs that happen to pop up on the main screen for me there’s
always a common factor in the more younger drawers and anime fanatics,

there is a lot of tracing.

Don’t get me wrong i used to trace to learn (and i still do.. over my own
photos or primary sketches) and that perfectly a-ok in my eyes!

However tracing and direct copying isn’t actually allowed. As in you’re copying
someone else’s work by tracing over it then submitting it and claiming it to be
your own which is against PMC rules, also shows a tad bit laziness!

If you’re new to drawing or getting the hang of something i suggest aiming for
specific things. If you’re learning how to do proportions i suggest you do primary
quick 2 min sketches of people with completely in pen only to get the hang of
drawing proportions. things like hands, lips etc. there’s so many tutorials. If
you do anime or anything using figure and you need action poses, go on
deviantart. There are tons of pose guides and reference sheets you can use
because you’ve been given permission to/.
Drawing programs like Manga Studio and Photoshop (i think) have pose models to help you too.
If you’re drawing animals look at proportion sheets of those animals and look at fur studies etc. Just
examples but it helps a lot, you'll learn more from doing this than directly
tracing over someone else’s work, and you’ll learn techniques much faster too.

Another idea on this subject is keeping a sketchbook and sticking everything
you draw in it. And i mean everything! all doodles, all final sketches,
anything. You can do it neatly page by page or go full out sketchbook style. I
have a video on YouTube somewhere about my very old anime drawings in a sketchbook
when i used to draw anime that i might link down here after as an example.
You'll look back on your sketchbook and see ideas you could re-use, poses you
could use, characters you could use, get extra inspiration, see what you could
improve on because when you look at a drawing after not seeing it for a week
you start noticing things you could improve on. And the best bit, looking back
on it after a year and looking at how much you have improved over time and how
your style has developed and what your strengths are.

My sketchbook from 2010-2012 old video.
Oh geez... ignore the account name. Me and Maddie from secondary school used to share a youtube account for school projects. This is an old account i cant actually access anymore and havent since 2012 because she locked me out :) These are drawings from when i loved anime, they are old but this is my example of sticking everything in shows progress. As you can see, most of the starting drawings i have copied another anime picture or used it as a reference, as the book goes on i stop doing it and use imagination or pose models. These are old :) 2014 work is here: http://www.planetminecraft.com/blog/ellielzas-minecraftanime-art-blog/

But yes, tracing. It isn’t allowed but there’s many ways you can use references
to aid you rather than just copying someone else’s work. And trust me, if its
traced off an anime picture, there’s a 70% chance the moderators have seen that
picture before! Be creative!

Pop Reel

There’s always someone complaining about pop reels. Nonstop. And
as much as i don’t like repetitive blogs/complaints on the same topic I’m going
to have to bring this up. The pop reel is not good. And there’s a common
connection to art blogs and this pop reel. And this section here is only about
art blogs in the pop reel. Though it may relate to other categories of PMC, this
is just aimed at the art blogs!

If you visit PMC regularly you'll have noticed a common trend, every day there
is at least 1 art blog in the pop reel. It usually has a title along the lines
of "(Name)'s Art blog". And this is the most common one. And to
be honest i prefer this title to the other variations because its clean and
simple, and is probably going to be popular more for the content than the
title. But there’s also a couple other common variations:

"(Name)'s
rubbish art blog!"

"(Name)'s Pitiful art blog"

"(Name)'s Stupid art blog"

"I cant draw"

"I drew once"

And these ones tend to get to the pop reel. Not because of content, but because
they’ve encouraged people to click on their blog then comment on it saying
"nooo you’re not bad". And generally these blogs have a small amount of drawings that
have been done in a program similar to Microsoft paint, is highly pixelated and
obscure. And as i said earlier i know the audience
on this site here is a younger one but that’s where a balance needs to be
struck, should the pop reel be left to the current system where most popular
(most viewed etc.) blog gets to be on the pop reel? Or do you think there
could be a more refined system to allow the best of the day (as decided in a different
way) be shown as the highlight of PMC on that reel?  There are a lot of
days where at least one post on the blog is a "troll" post, or a post
with hardly any diamonds, favourites or happy comments but has struck up the
popularity by putting a grabbing title that compels people to comment without
seeing the blog. Though this is actually quite clever if you’re an xp hog, it’s
not showing the best of PMC... it’s actually showing the opposite.

I don’t want to offend anyone here, but I think that the pop reel is something
that should be more rewarding and also show the best of the community. And by best of community i mean those with so much effort, improvement, originality and ideas, like it’s
supposed to right now but there’s a lot of hiccups in the system as i just
mentioned. I don’t think almost every art blog should make it to the pop reel
just because it’s an art blog. I still think there should be effort and
creativity and originality in it. Not 3 tiny drawings in Microsoft paint that get to the
top because its Anime or because of the title.

Those of you that use deviantart will be aware of the daily deviations. It has
the same idea as the pop reel
however the community pick out what they think should be on the pop reel, send
it to the correlating moderator and they approve a certain amount each day.
This means the top submissions get to be there and get to be seen as the
highlight of deviantart, but the community on PMC has been having and outcry
because the pop reel is "ugly" or submissions that deserve to be seen
just don’t get the attention because of a flood of other posts that aren’t as
good by far take their place that get views by advertising nonstop in chat or
using titles like i mentioned above.

However, the function used on deviantart wouldn’t work on PMC. Or wouldn’t work
unless a proper system of moderators to each section was established. And my
overall opinions have been that tracing isn’t allowed, pop reels need to
contain better quality of work or have stricter sorting in order to get onto
the pop reel.

But its a thought, Is there a way to sort this issue with the pop
reel with art blogging? Do you, the community, have any ideas on how to improve
this issue? Or have an idea of new system? Or should it be top submissions of
each category picked by moderators and the community? Or would this cause even
more issues than before!?

Let me know in the comments below what you think about tracing and art blogs in
the pop reel :)

Also i would like to put some awesome blog here that are just plain awesome and
ones that i think deserve way more love!

Hey just a subjestion, some people have trouble reading pink on white or just low contrast in general, so maybe making the pink italics and just black would help...

I wanted to title my art blog "I drew once and it was AWFUL" as a form of satire. Some because I find a general quantity of the art I do to be tedious and time consuming (Although I'm generally proud of it once I choose to stop working on it) but mostly because I didn't want people to come on my blog and expect SRS BSNISS. Even the title picture depicts a funny face to ephasise that fact. I'm only a little sorry if it bothers you because I made it pretty clear I was trying to be funny with it.

Until recently, hadn't really known that tracing was a something that people did with digital art. Go figure.

Nice blog by the way, nice to see something new around here.

Boy, am I glad that someone has finally decided to discuss the major issue of people tracing art and posting it on their blogs. Thank you for this, and nice job!
