The SBD Dauntless was a naval scout and bomber aircraft manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company and was used extensively throughout the Pacific Theatre of World War II. It first flew on May 1, 1940, and was first used in combat during the Attack on Pearl Harbor but their first major use was during the Battle of the Coral Sea when they, along with some TBD Devastators, sunk the Imperial Japanese ship, Shōhō. The Battle of Midway was also a major contribution for Dauntlesses as they were able to sink the Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, and Hiryū aircraft carriers. A variant, known as the A-24 Banshee, was used by the USAAF for land-based operations as well. The SBD Dauntless was retired in 1959 by the Mexican Air Force and some are displayed in museums. Four are known to still be airworthy in the United States.
