Welcome towards my entry for the “Community Village – Medieval” jam, hosted by Stubbs1

Cloister Hill plot (171 ½), Turku Finland Minecraft Map

In this unclassified jam, I chose the residential housing. More specifically “Cloister hill (171 ½)”*, situated in present-day Turku, Finland. This is an existing housing plot built somewhere after1800 and has been given a second life as part of “The Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum”. Yes, you read that right, you can admire this housing plot with your own eyes.

*the numbers on Cloister Hill quarter are given in brackets

Note: I did my best on proper source annotation but given the differences between countries, annotations systems and so on, on this topic, it’s likely not going to be 100% correct for you.

Building part
Historic
Building
Exterior buildings
Houses were built from local wood or sometimes from the wood that was left when their old house was demolished. (3)
The landlord's house is made of different wood → old house and the 'room to let'; of local wood.
Building usage
Houses in the block had owners with the following occupations: Bricklayer, room to let, basket maker, goldsmith, bookbinder, tailor, painter. (3)
Room to let and a landlord house.
Fire Safety
Turku and other medieval cities were quite strict about fire safety in combination with the many wooden houses. Mandatory items included: ladder to the roof (sweeping chimneys), buckets, tools and water / filled rain barrel per housing plot (1)
Various taken over, ladder to the roof, rain barrels for water.
Food garden
Vegetable gardens were actually a permanent part of the housing plots. Various edible plants were grown. Decades later, flowers, fruit trees and the like were also planted. Animals such as chickens, goats, pigs and sometimes cows were also kept. (1)
Vegetable garden with edible plants.
Interior design
The interior is minimalist for the rooms in the rental (note: a 'room to let' is old English for a 'room for rent'). A sofa that also serves as a bed, a cupboard, table with chair and a chest. Not all rooms have a ceiling, but look directly at the roof. For the finishing touch, rugs on the floor, photos (photography was on the rise at the time) and wallpaper made of newspaper, yes you read that correctly. (3 + own visit)
Maintained as best as possible with all rooms having a ceiling. Detailing in the sense of newsprint is somewhat difficult to imitate.
Cooking
A suitable stone cooking oven was required for cooking. These were missing from the rooms for rental. For the latter one to prepare food: food on a trivet in the stove used for heating the room. (3)
A suitable stone cooking oven installed in the landlords house and the luxurious rooms to let.
Sauna
From the early 17th century, saunas were banned in Turku because of the risk of fire. Remarkably enough, the house of the bricklayer does have a sauna. A sauna with a chimney, which is why it was probably approved at the time. (3)
Not included.
