“Oh! Look! Léo! There’s a shack we can stop at for supper!” Lilly shouts, flitting ahead of us with her purplish, glassy wings. Her coal-black pigtails bounce. “Uh… I dunno… This seems kinda sketch, Lil.”

“‘This seems kinda sketch, Lil.’” She mutters with a very bad impression of Léo. “I don’t sound like that!” He cries incredulously. I chuckle. Léo glowers at Lilly, who’s still mimicking him. Léo sneaks up behind her and pulls her coal black pigtails. “Ooh, Mercy this, Mercy that- Oww!” Léo chuckled as he returned to my side. “Who pulled my pigtails?” She squeals. I hold my hands up in an innocent gesture. “Okay, okay. It was me.” Léo confesses. “I should’ve known…” She mutters. I let out a full-out laugh at that.




As we walk up the pathway to the large cottage, I instantly notice a sign, beaten into the ground hastily, reading, “Finn Crade’s Cookhouse! Best flickin in town!” Finn Crade… Have I heard that name before? My eyes light up. “Léo!” He looks down at me, probably shocked by my outburst. “Look at the sign again!” He rereads it and gives a small shake of his head. “No, it’s not him.” Fine, bring out the wrath and stubbornness of Léo. Whatever. Not like I care.

But I do care…




I realize my lack of motion has caused Léo and Lilly to stare at me, concerned.

I sigh. “Let’s go inside then, shall we?” Léo opens the door for me, then closes it in Lilly’s face. “Hey!” She shouts. As I step into the restaurant, the savory aroma of flickin fills my nose. The atmosphere is busy yet calm at the same time. People are chatting with others, others are ordering, and still others are enjoying their company. I scan the booths and tables. All are full, except for one in the back. The checkered pattern on the floor is a bit dizzying but still friendly. The tables, carved into a rounded-off rectangle shape, are a dark wood color. They seem to be varnished well. I sit down next to Lilly, and Léo sits in front of me, looking deep into my eyes. I blush and open my mouth to speak, but a waiter interrupts my thoughts. “Hey, welcome to the Cookhouse! I’m Finn, and I’ll be your waiter for today.” He smiles. His dark hair and beard are tinted with gray hairs, but he looks happy. He pulls a notepad from his apron. “So, what can I get you to drink?” He asks, cocking his head slightly. His forehead creases slightly with recognition as he looks at Léo. He opens his mouth to say something, then Lilly, abrupt as always, asks for a glass of water. Léo and I agree. “Okay, will do.” He nods and walks off. I lean in, looking Léo in the eyes. “Did you see that? That man… Er, Finn. He… ” I whisper. “Just kiss already!” Lilly shouts, probably feeling distant from us. Léo chuckles and sits back. His cheeks are pink.

Finn comes back with our waters and we order. I subconsciously reach my hand toward Léo’s, seeing how some of the women in the restaurant are eyeballing him. They scoff and turn back to whatever they were doing. He gives a grin, showing his perfectly straight teeth. I blush.

Now I know he likes me in the same way…




“Now are you two going to kiss?” Lilly asks. “Maybe,” Léo admits. “She is pretty attractive, after all.”

“Ooooh!” Lilly giggles giddily. I let out a sigh and try to hide my blush.
