Place a hay bale under a campfire to get the red variant or place it under a soul campfire to get the purple variant!

There is a blockstate that the campfire has that detects when there is a block of hay underneath, the file inside the "blockstate" folder determines that the campfire uses a different model when that blockstate is "true", that's basically how it works :3

Not all blocks have blockstates, and not all blockstates detect a block of hay underneath, some detect rotation, for example the furnace has one that detects if it's on or off, you can look at the block in-game with F3 and to the right the blockstates should appear in case the block has any

I guess I didn't know you could change the texture like that. So is there some hackery behind the scenes, or just small edits to json files?

Most people would insist that requires Optifine. Which is obnoxious for Sodium players. But, I get that there are several files that can't be edited with texture or datapacks.
