Backstory: Rainey grew up as the oldest of the three Arlen daughters; when she was around 4 her parents discovered she had an incredible singing talent and each worked two jobs respectively in order to send her to a prestigious Californian arts school for gifted and talented children. In her early childhood Rainey was often shuffled around to different teachers, babysitters, and friends’ parents, tending to only come home on weekends to visit her biological family. By the age of 10 she’d made an album and her name was quickly rising to notoriety, to her exhilaration (and confusion). Often lonely, she spent much of her spare time reading books; her favorites were The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. At 13, her ten-year-old sister Mason introduced her to Monstercat. Rainey anonymously submitted songs under the name Ring, and within a few months it was a household name in indie-music circles. Because of her clear, three-octave range, her parents had wanted her to attempt more classical music, and severely disapproved of her chosen style. Rainey moved out at 17 to continue her steady Monstercat career as well as pursue other musical dreams. She met her girlfriend, Noelle Lockwood, by literally running into her at a sushi bar with a mug of coffee in her hand. That eventually led to a first date; and now she and Noelle share a flat with their two Boston terriers, Mistro and Lyric.
