Näkki is a spirit living in sweet waters in Finnish mythology. This shapeshifting humanoid creature is better known in the Scandinavia as a violin-playing man. In Finnish mythology, though, Näkki is female, and drowns people who are trying to swim, often children. In the eastern part of Finland, the same creature is better known as vetehinen, but they are similar otherwise. The myth of Näkki came to Finland from Scandinavia’s Näcke, and the myth itself has Germanic roots.
