The Black Mage was the founder and leader of Aurora, an organization built to study and protect the light. However, the power that the light had eventually caused him to seek more power, leading him to embrace the darkness as well. Or at least, that's what I make of it; the story isn't very clear there. Anyway, Luminous was also a member of Aurora, but it doesn't specify is Luminous specifically trained under him.
