The Copperband Butterflyfish, also known as the beaked coral fish, is found in reefs in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans. These fish are easily identified by the yellow banding and long snout. Copperband butterflyfish can grow to 8 inches but in a home aquarium are usually half that size. Copperband butterflyfish are found at depths of 1−25 metres either alone or in pairs. They are usually found on coral reefs or rocky shorelines, and also in estuaries and silty inner reefs. Their life span is about 10 years long and their slender snout is an adaptation for feeding on benthic invertebrates in crevices and holes. This fish is sometimes used to control Aiptasia, a common nuisance anemone species, in aquariums. They are believed to be monogamous and they are considered difficult to keep in a home aquarium.
  They are reluctant feeders and will need to be presented with live food to keep them sustained. This species is normally quite peaceful and shy, and should not be kept with aggressive tank mates. It can be quite aggressive towards its own species; If several are to be kept together they must be added at the same time to a large aquarium. Only one Copperband Butterflyfish should be housed in a smaller tank unless a male-female pair is obtained. These fish thrive in mature tanks where natural food sources, such as small crustaceans and worms, are abundant. A newer tank may not provide the necessary sustenance, leading to stress and malnutrition. They are more delicate than most other Butterflyfish and require excellent conditions as well as a solid diet. They have been known to pick at soft corals, anemones, and feather dusters, so caution should be taken before adding one to your tank. They are also best kept singly in an (at least) 55-gallon tank.
