Muv-Luv Lore:
The MiG-21 Balalaika is a 1st generation Soviet Tactical Surface Fighter developed from the F-4R Phantom, with modifications and specifications geared towards higher mobility. It is named after the Russian stringed instrument of the same name, and is a reference to the shape of each of its jump units resembling a balalaika.
This pack includes the MiG-21PF and the regular MiG-21, all from Schwarzesmarken, the East German side story from the Alternative timeline.
The MiG-21PF was to counter electromagnetic interference from anti-laser heavy metal clouds, Jürgen Bernhard requested and helped develop a specialized variant of the MiG-21, equipped with a larger sensor mast to facilitate improved detection and communication performance.
Behind the Scenes:
Pretty much a redeco/remold of the previous MiG-21. The main difference between the MiG-21 and the PF is that the PF has the main antenna on the right instead of the left. Also, I used the real East German MiG-21 as a reference for these paint schemes.
A real MiG-21PF.
A real East German MiG-21.
Real-World Lore:
The MiG-21PF was the production version of the all-weather interceptor. These were powered by the R11F2-300 turbojet and, starting with the seventh production batch, fitted with the RP-21 radar (the first six batches used the older TsD-30T radar (aka RP-9-21). Further, the weapons control system was modified from that of the F-13 to allow use of the RS-2US (aka K-5MS) beam-riding AAM in addition to the IR-seeking K-13. This was also a version for export to Warsaw Pact countries; only difference from the domestic version was the IFF equipment.
251 MiG-21s of seven versions were handed over to the Luftwaffe upon reunification; these were rapidly phased out of service. The LSK/NVA received 75 'MiG-21F-13' in 1962–64, 52 'MiG-21PF', 83 'MiG-21PFM' without cannon (locally designated 'MiG-21SPS') and 56 with cannon (locally designated 'MiG-21SPS-K'), 89 'MiG-21M', 68 'MiG-21MF', 14 'MiG-21bis' izdeliye 75A and 32 izdeliye 75B, 14 'MiG-21U' izdeliye 66-400 and 31 izdeliye 66-600, 17 'MiG-21US' and 37 'MiG-21UM'.
