The Kiwi Bird!

My Fall Festival Community Event submission is a daddy Kiwi bird proudly looking after his egg. Yep! Both parents will incubate the egg but commonly it is the dads job!

Typically, this is the time of year Kiwi birds will mate as the food is abundant and the wb_sunny temperature is warm in New Zealand (where I am from!) but the season can start in June and go all the way through to March.

This flightless bird is a true survivor with the conservation status varying from Recovering to Nationally Critical with all 5 species being fiercely protected. Becaue they do not fly, they are vunerable to preditory land mammals like Possums, Stoats, Dogs, Cats, Rats and Ferrets.

The Kiwi bird will sing to attract a partner and if he is sucessful he'll keep the lucky lady as his main squeeze! music_note

The egg takes up to 20% of the females body and near the end it takes up so much room she can not eat much at all! Just before the egg is ready to hatch - the parent will not leave the nest unattended and quite often will not eat for 3 days!

Protected, Kiwi birds can live for up to 60 years. So if you come to our beautiful corner of the world - please visit a wildlife conservation park or a habitat preserve and help us Kiwis save the Kiwi birds from extinction.

Just a small submission this time as I'm working on a MEGA holiday map for December... Oops - did I say that out loud? sentiment_very_satisfied

And as always, pay it forward!
