The Norman Nef was one of the most popular ships of the Middle Ages. Together with the advent of the cog it formed the backbone of European maritime transport. The Nef was developed around the 11th century from the architecural style of the Nordic longships, especially the Knorr and the more potbellied romanesque ship types. It was used especially as a transport ship in the Crusades and can still be seen in many depictions today.
Normally the Nef was sailed, but in case of emergence oars could be used. The forts at the bow and stern were not added until the 12th century. Although the Nef was a relatively slow ship, it made up for this with its cargo capacity of up to 100 tons. It was precisely this characteristic that gave the Nef its heyday, as the Crusades made this type of ship more popular in the Mediterranean region as well.
The Nef "Bolgehest" will become part of Kjevegart's merchant fleet in the future. It is part of the German medieval roleplay server creative-empire.de .

Das normannische Nef war eines der populärsten Schiffe des Mittelalters. Zusammen mit dem Aufkommen der Kogge bildete sie das Rückgrat des europäischen Seetransports. Das Nef wurde etwa im 11. Jahrhundert aus dem Baustil der nordischen Langschiffe, insbesondere der Knorr und den dickbäuchigeren romanischen Schiffstypen entwickelt. Es wurde besonders als Transportschiff in den Kreuzzügen genutzt und ist bis heute noch auf vielen Darstellungen zu erkennen.
Normalerweise wurde das Nef gesegelt, im Notfall konnten aber auch auf Ruder zurückgegriffen werden. Die Kastelle an Bug und Heck kamen erst ab dem 12. Jahrhundert hinzu. Zwar handelte es sich bei dem Nef um ein relativ langsames Schiff, machte dies allerdings durch seine Ladekapazität von bis zu 100 Tonnen wett. Gerade diese Eigenschaft bescherte dem Nef eine Blütezeit, da durch die Kreuzzüge dieser Schiffstyp auch im mediterranen Raum populärer.
Das Nef "Bolgehest" wird zukünftig Teil der Handelsflotte Kjevegarts werden. Es ist Teil des deutschen mittelalterlichen Roleplay Servers creative-empire.de .
