Skinwalkers in Navajo culture are evil witches with the ability to shape-shift into animals.
These witches were once healers or spiritual people in their tribe,
but gain evil powers after killing a family member.
Skinwalkers wear pelts of the animal they shift into, mostly being the pelts of wolves, foxes, coyotes or bears.
Wearing the pelts or skulls of predators are considered taboo because
of Skinwalkers using them to enhance their abilities.
A way to tell if an animal is a skinwalker is by its eyes-- the eyes are that of a human's.
The Navajo called them the Yee Naaldooshii,
which translate to "with it, he goes on all fours".
I had a handful of ideas what to do for the contest, and I decided to go with something familiar to me.
In the renders of the skin, I decided to point up the ears since I wanted it to look more wolf/coyote-like.
I found it a bit difficult to find more depictions of skinwalkers in Navajo culture, so I looked at the outfits of healers since skinwalkers once use to be one. The information itself was difficult for me to find too, so I do hope that the story about them is correct.
Enjoy!
