The Dangers of Opping Players
I tend to bump our server post here on Planet Minecraft somewhat frequently to attract new potential members. The other day, I bumped like I normally do, and shortly afterwards, had a new player join. Before they even began our rules maze, before they thanked us for welcoming them, or even said hi, I looked at the chat and shuddered. “can I have rank”. This certainly was not the first time it has happened, and it will not be the last, I can assure you. I responded no to them, and tried to explain our ranking system to them, but got a lovely “f**k you” in return. I wonder to myself frequently, why? Why do players join a new, well-maintained server and feel entitled to a staff position or op status?

Realistically, though, why do people think they can join a server that they’ve never been on before and have no connection to, and instantly become an op or admin? What good does it serve a player like that? Do some servers honestly give everybody permission to /stop or /banall? I don’t understand why somebody I’ve never met before would expect me to make them an admin on my server. Am I supposed to give them console access too, while I’m at it? And the keys to my house, and car?
A server’s ranking system, at least for staff, should be based on TRUST. I personally would never make a forum post asking for staff members because I wouldn’t be able to trust them instantly. Any random person could claim to have experience as server staff, and they could end up banning everybody because you decided to trust them.
No, if a player wants to be staff, they should prove their worth and show the owner how they function on the server. Just because a player is an admin on one server doesn’t’ mean they’d be a good admin for ANY server. I know that there are servers out there in which my somewhat abrasive administration techniques would not be cut out for.
Getting opped or promoted should be trust-based. The player should have earned their rank, and deserved a promotion. You don’t walk into your boss’s office and demand a promotion and a raise. In fact, that could even get you in trouble, and on our server, it does.
I have a short story for you about my early Minecrafting days, when I had just joined my first server. The owner didn’t exactly have the most trustworthy staff, and before I knew it, one of the admins had opped me and then left. I was terrified that I was going to get banned for that, but I didn’t know how to undo it myself, and was afraid to tell anybody. I didn’t know half of the commands I was capable of, but I knew it could be destructive. What if I had chosen to /nuke a player? Or //wand and set an entire town to lava? Or /kill everybody and then /ban players that I didn’t like? Or just /op everybody so that they, too, could join in the fun? Fortunately, I didn’t do any of that. I had opped my one friend, and we used our op powers to help players fix grief and expand their towns. I was trusted and known by everybody on the server. Once the server owner found out that I had been opped, he de-opped me and my friend, but wasn’t mad with us because he knew he could trust me. He just didn’t want me to remain opped because I was not a staff member. If I wanted to become opped again, I couldn’t just tell the owner to op me and make me an admin. I would have to prove myself and earn it, which I did.
And that’s what you have to do, too. You actually do WORSE to log on and demand op or rank right off the bat. In some cases, it can even result in a ban. If you want to become a staff member, you have to prove to the owner that you deserve it. And for God’s sake, never curse at an admin. That’s just in bad taste.
