§1-Introduction

There are more than three dozen structures in Minecraft (don’t fact check that, please). These structures range in size from small like the ocean ruins to large like the ancient cities, and clearly come from different races, evident by the unique handiwork in each. The Illagers made the Pillager outposts, and the Witches made the swamp huts. But I want to dive a little bit deeper into these structures, trying to dissect the sherds of pottery we find –not only asking who built them, but also what culture we can find regarding the race.

It’s a pretty obvious fact, yet one that seems to often be neglected. The Minecraft world has culture. It is evident in Minecraft Legends and heavily shown in Minecraft Dungeons–but even the base game shows us that the Piglins have culture in the form of music and their pigstep disc. We see that the Illagers have culture by their banners and Villagers show it in their robes.

The process of figuring out the structures’ builder is easy. One can find what race built a certain structure often by using the structure's name, design, and cool little sherds of pottery. Once we know the creator of the structure, we simply find consistency between creators, and can find culture. One of the easiest ways to do this is through pottery.

Let’s look at some sherds. Also, I think MatPat already made this common knowledge, but I’m going to say it anyway; Sherds are pieces of pottery and terracotta. Shards are pieces of glass, stained or otherwise. This is a archæological term used to differentiate items on the site, making it easier to communicate. Just figured I’d let y’all know.

§2-Ocean Ruins

By figuring out what people made what structure, we can then backwards-engineer that understanding, helping us figure out the culture of the structure's makers! In the real-world potter was used for a variety of stuff, yet it often portrayed consistent imagery. Pots in the ancient world would often have images of gods, food (or sources thereof) and similar things that a certain culture held as sociologically “valuable”.

The pots in ocean ruins are a pretty good place to begin; a total of 6 sherds can be found here. The cold ocean ruins contain the “blade” “explorer”, “mourner” and “plenty” sherds, whilst the warmer ruins have “shelter”, “snort”, “angler”. The cold ocean ruins seem to have been made by Heroes, while the warm ruins were made by the group I’ve dubbed “Builders”--please read my 1st lore Theory blog for more info, I have not got the space to cover the entire story.

Now, we know that the Heroes were a bit of a violent group, possibly being the ones who started the Hero/Builder war. Fittingly the cold ruins are castle-like and contain pottery sherd like “blade”, portraying a sword. The Heroes were not only violent, but also greedy, showing this in their “explorer” sherds and “plenty” sherds.

On the other hand, we see that Builders were peaceful. The architecture in the warmer ruins shows us culture as well. We see that they take pride in building, and enjoy using craftsmanship to make beautiful structures. They have refined and chiseled blocks–unlike the cold stone bricks of the colder ruins. The sherds also tell a story. We see that they enjoyed fishing (as seen on the “angler” sherd). They also seemed to have once lived in a savanna, seen on the “shelter” sherd (this sherd may actually be showing the landscape of the ruins before the flooding I described HERE) The “snort” shard also shows us something. This one is actually a bit of an odd one. It could be describing the sniffer mob itself, or maybe a love for flowers that the Builders had? Maybe showing a love for mobs in general, not specific to the sniffer? I’m not sure, but I assume it is one of those that which I have just presented.

§3-Desert Structures

The difference between these two groups is great, and one which I’d never have thought of unless the sherds existed. Of course we knew of certain aspects of these groups’ culture, but so much more has been unlocked since 1.20. More sherds are coming in 1.21, and so are more armour trims. OOOOH armour trims! They are almost as useful as the sherds, but I think I’ll wait to write about them, as they are a bit harder to discern, and I want to stay on topic.

What about the desert wells? These were largely useless structures up until 1.21 , but have since become more useful (albeit just for æsthetic pots and lorinst such as myself) with new sherds being present within their water-filled casing. Wells contain the “arms up” sherd, as well as the “brewer” sherd. Not much to work with, but we know that these wells contain fluid, which would have been useful for brewing. The “arms up” sherd could be seen as worshipping, or dancing, or even fleeing. I think though, that it is a celebration shown. The character on the sherd seems to be happy, having found water? I really have no clue, but it fits with the idea of a well more than fleeing does.

Temples also have sherds to discover. These include the “archer”, “miner”, “prize” and “skull” sherds. I have before mentioned the idea of desert temples being forts in a war (again, read my 1st Lore Theory). I see the “archer” sherd being a perfect fit in a war scenario, and “miner” also works, gathering resources for war–it’s a bit of a stretch, but it does make sense, and it’s the best idea I’ve got. “Prize” also makes sense, in that I believe the Heroes who occupied the temples to have been winning, and to have had loot built up.

§4-Outroduction

Now, there are no direct holes in my ideas here–nothing totally absurd, and nothing contradictory. I am aware that some things are stretches in logic, but we must remember that although these sherds have had a lot of build-up, they really are only able to be used as supporting evidence. They are only able to tell part of a story. As I mentioned, the armour trims will be discussed at some point, though I’m unsure exactly when. Also, maybe banner patterns? There isn’t much to work with on the topic though.

I hope you found this helpful. I am confident in my predictions., and hope you are too. I emplore you to make your own theories though, and not take my own as cannon, or as fact. I am simply a lorist, finding connections. You should also be a lorist, trying to find the pieces of this puzzle–a puzzle that we all may be collectively chasing, a puzzle that may be nonexistent, based on coincidences, and the unintentional. KEEP ON LOOOOOORING!

P.S., I will cover trial chambers soon. I know they are planning to add new sherds. In fact I’ve already written a blog. I just want to wait for 1.21 to come out before making any theories, as I consider it irresponsible to post theories on subjects that may change.
