“Sirens blared in the distance. Looking in the direction the awful noise was coming from, I saw a building melt into the ground. I believe it was a laboratory, but it turned purple then vanished. Tendrils snaked out in all directions, consuming everything in their path.” Drew finished writing. All that had taken place months ago, far before it was widespread. The decay, it was called. No one knew what started it, or how to stop it. Before long, the world was gone. Just a ball of purple oozing slime was all that was left. Drew sighed, looking out the window. While all the rich and powerful fled to orbit in rockets, the slums of the world took residence in airplanes. He was lucky, his was modified to run on solar energy. It took care of most essentials, converting waste into food. However it wouldn’t last forever, malnutrition would kill him if engine failure didn't happen first.
The space force logo popped up on his television. The rounds of salvation were happening again, it seemed. The wealthy had banded together, made some form of government. Once a month they would draw in 5 random people to serve them, they said these people were treated like kings. But Drew knew the truth, his sister had been one of the chosen. The tractor beams stole her away before he could do anything, and she wrote of the suffering she endured. The chosen were often killed and feasted upon, as the rich had a desire for meat. Animals couldn’t be raised in space, the station gardens were too small, yet the powerful will always get what they want. They were so safe up in space, they thought. No plane can leave the atmosphere, so no one could do anything.
Looking back at the television, he watched the faces of the chosen flash across the screen. He knew none of them, well he recognized the last person. Chills creeping down his back, he recognized his face on the screen. Before he could do anything, a green light surrounded him as he faded out of consciousness.
