History:
The four masted barque Peking was built in 1911 by the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg for the company F. Laeisz. She was built to carry cargo from Hamburg (Germany) to Valparaíso (Chile). During the first world war she remained interned in the port of Valparaíso and was later awarded to Italy as a war reparation. But lukely for F. Laeisz the italians had nothing to do with her and so the company was able to buy her back in 1923. She continued to sail cargo for F. Laeisz untill 1932 when she was sold to Shaftesbury Homes and was renamed Arethusa and was rebuilt to be used as a stationary training ship. During the second world war she was used by the royal navy and renamed H.M.S. Pekin, later returning to the role as a training ship. In 1974 she was sold to Jack Aron to be used as a museum ship at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York where she was restored to her original condition when she was built. Sadly the Peking quickly fell into a state of neglect, but was saved from the scrapyard in 2015. The Peking was then transported over the atlantic by the Combi Dock III. Once she arrived in Germany the Peking got the restoration she deserved and returned to her home port Hamburg after 88 years to be a museum ship like she was in New York.
