“Get a move on, Fern Buddy, its gonna get dark soon.”
I slap the stubborn reindeer with my boots.
She complains.
“I know you are hungry, I am too! But if we don’t get moving its gonna be night
fall soon, then we’ll be in real big trouble.”
Night was approaching, it was getting colder, windier, and the sun was slowly sliding down beyond the horizon.
If we didn’t get back to the cabin quick enough we’d be wolf food for sure and Aunt Harishka would be worried.
Wolves howl in the distance, sounding not to far off
Fern quickens her pace as if feeling my uneasiness.
“Good girl.” I give her a soft pat on her neck.
She likes that.
She’s tired just as I am, her breathing is much quicker. We both are very tired.
We had been walking for hours down the trails hunting waiting to find a random deer or
even a rabbit.
But, all I had gotten was a small quail, not even enough for a meal.
My stomach growls in my chest. We had to get to the cabin fast of neither Fern nor I would
have enough strength to go on.
A wolf howls this time it is much closer sounding as though the wolf is very close
nearby, freakishly close near by.
I look about feeling a sudden feeling of fear, suddenly I feel very vulnerable out here
alone, at the dark of night.
I feel something touch my leg, I look back hundreds of red eyes are staring back at me
following close behind.
My heart jumps in my
chest. “Eh..”
“Fern run!!”
Fern doesn’t look up back at me, but she gets the order. She runs for it pushing all of
her strength.
“Come on girl! You got this.” I shout to her knowing she can’t understand, but
feeling as though it calms myself down.
Howls follow behind us, I push myself into my reindeer's neck earnestly hoping to reach
the cabin.
