For a man whose way of life has been threatened by modernity, activist and tribal leader Chief Kotaku of the Nesche people of the Alaskan Arctic, he has always been calm and knew what to do with outsiders who brought violence, disease, and death.

It is said that Kotaku inherited his position as chief from his father, Nesche at a very young age. As a young warrior, he was known for his courage, daring, and leadership in battle. In his early years of being chief there was a major war between the Kotaku Tribe and the Neches Tribe. Vanir was able to lead is tribe with a lot of courage and with that they won. Having this experience made Vanir stronger and wiser.

Vanir was a venerable leader respected for his peaceful ways, not his prowess at war. Chief Vanir made sure him and his tribe were helpful in times of distress with each other and other tribes.
