My entry for the Desert Skin contest.
Backstory
One fateful day, a normal one like any other, Steve and Alex were out playing in the desert. They played and played, making sandcastles and forts. They were having so much fun. It was so hot, they decided they should lighten their armor a bit. "Perhaps to a light set of green leather" said Alex. Steve replied with "Yeah, sure! Let's go find the perfect cactus!" They searched and searched, but their perfect green leather armor seemed like it was years away. Not a single cactus was "perfect". They grew tired and hungry. They were almost to the point of dehydration, but then, Alex had spotted a desert well. Just sitting there, alone, filled with water. No villages nearby. No temples nearby. It seemed too good to be true. They rushed over and used their bottles to fetch the water. Sweet sweet relief. Not long after, Steve noticed something strange. There was a cactus nearby. It seemed odd, he had not noticed it before. He went to inspect it. After doing so, he yelled something to Alex which sounded like "Hey! I think I found a good cactus!". Alex hurried over quickly, stumbling over her own two feet. "This will do" said Alex gracefully. But, something WAS off about this cactus. As Alex went to swing her axe to cut it down, The cactus came to life! It seemed very angry! The cactus attacked Alex, striking her to the ground with a flash of its heavy cacti arms. The cactus chased the two crafters home. He wanted revenge. Alex and Steve were scared and trapped inside of their home forever. Now the cactus can be seen every day, sitting there, waiting for the chance to strike.
