Entry for the seven seas contest.
Imagine an alternate world, mostly like our own, except some of our species evolved to live partially underwater. One of these great underwater civilizations is nation of the Maranfibians - from Portuguese meaning "Amphibious sea". This unique race developed along the coastal waters of the subtropical Atlantic, off the coast of what we know as Portugal and Morocco. They took advantage of the challenging conditions above the water and fertile conditions below to create vast systems of marine agriculture and industry. In particular, they use the summer upwelling as a sort of monsoon, dramatically increasing the fertility of the coastal waters. They also developed technologies completely out of sight of us land humans. They created many materials and dyes from sea plants and algae. The most important of these, a sort of sea-wood, was and still is used at the primary building material for their dense underwater cities. But this civilization was not just limited to below the surface. They sailed above the surface as well, looking for suitable shelves or banks to grow the sea plants and algae.
Here is a young Maranfibian teenage boy, going to the surface for the first time, to assist in a voyage to find yet more shallows. Boa viagem, young adventurer.
