Leo, or Leon (Λέων) VI was a Byzantine and Eastern Roman emperor of the 9th and 10th centuries. He was known for his wisdom and was given the epithet "Σοφός". His military actions were bad to be blunt as he lost against the Bulgars under Simeon I, the Arabs, and Constantinople was sacked by the Kievan Rus under Oleg of Novgorod, but this was not his specialty. He did win against the Emirate of Tarsos one one occasion though. Leo completed the Basilika, a collection of laws started by his father, Basil the Macedonian. He also wrote the Book of the Eparch (Τὸ ἐπαρχικὸν βιβλίον), a manual on economic activity, the Kletorologion (Κλητορολόγιον) of Philotheos, which lists offices and stations in Byzantine government, and the Taktika (Τακτικά), a military treatise. He is also the translator of the relics of Lazaros of Bethany and wrote several hymns still used on Lazaros Saturday by the Eastern Orthodox Church.
