This was my previous project, where if you click on any slot in a chest, redstone will activate. behind the chest is a wall, which makes it seamless.

  • It used a method called Tile Entity Update Detector, which is pretty similar to block update detectors but can detect tile entity updates and more seamless updates.
  • Detector Rails are one of the tile entities. so if we hook it up to a tile entity update detector [TEUD], and if the player updates the Detector Rail by walking on it, the update detector will send the signal to the lamp. This is Survival-Buildable.
  • It seemed like 3/4 of the people didn't know about the TEUD, so I thought I would let everyone know how amazing it is. I'm not the first one to invent this mechanism, and I'm pretty sure it's all around :)

so this works for any tile entety not just the chest?

Yep. Any tile entity that can be updated. Any tile entity that can store items can be updated if you click a slot, because it's saying that you've stored air into the chest :)

Any item-storing tile entity won't be able to be pushed by a piston. That's my definition of it :)

I don't think so. I just tested it in my test world, and it didn't work.
Also a crafting table isn't a tile entity according to the wiki page. So I guess not :P
