The standart city plan used by the Spanish when Santiago de Chile was founded in 1541 consisted of 120 meter (394 ft) long square blocks, and every city had a square in the middle which was used as a social and commercial center. Lots of important buildings like cathedrals, government offices and hotels were built around this square, which makes it the historic core of the city. Today it serves as a park and it's one of Santiago's most famous touristic landmarks, and around it there's an amazing mix of 18th century buildings and modern office and apartment blocks.
