I figured out a pretty reliable way to count mobs by dropping them onto a pressure plate and then pushing them off the plate into a water flow by having the water flow one block over the plate (since water can't occupy the same space as a plate and the mobs will just stand on the plate if they're not encouraged to move). Works great for all mobs except spiders (I'm still working on a reliable spider counter) so my mob trap separates spiders from other mobs and sends them to their own grinder without counting them.

The digital counter is a adapted from a an ingeniously compact design by "Icks" who posted schematics here: www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=154238&start=120

The texture pack is Minecraft Enhanced 128bit using custom textures

If you download the schematic I would recommend pasting it deep underground from a location 2 or 3 blocks above bedrock. If you choose to paste it above ground you should do it over water because there will be some lava leaking out of it.

Wow, this circuit is very simple.
This circuit is very small than older minecraft segment system.

Extremely impressive work! Would love to have the download so I could study your schematic. I could learn a lot from you!

Thanks, but keep in mind that someone else (Icks) designed and built the counter (credit where credit is due) I just adapted it.

I just made the schematic available. This is the entire counter and the sorter/grinder section of my trap with part of the spawning tunnels). There are some mob spawners in the spawner tunnels that I was using for testing to see how many mobs the thing could handle before it jammed up.

The schematic save was made while looking north at the lowest point in the complex in the south end. Keep in mind this was originally underground but it should paste okay above ground.

You'll need to replace a few repeaters since WorldEdit doesn't properly save repeaters yet. There are none in the counter itself, only on the pulse and reset lines going to the counter from the mob trap. The pulse line runs over the ceiling and the reset line runs under the floor.

The lever on the balcony is the reset button: flip it down for 3 seconds or until all three digits are zero, then flip it up to allow the counter to run. There is another redundant reset located to the right of the counter by the access door.

There is also a manual counter button located on top of the counter for testing.

The counter does work, but it seems to be somewhat fussy about where it's located (some kind of issue with the redstone circuits crossing chunk boundaries), so if the counter digits go bananas try pasting it in a slightly different location.

BE AWARE that there may be some lava falling out of it when you paste it, so either paste it in the ground or paste it out over the ocean just in case.

Enjoy!
