Built in 1968, the Lazarus Department Store was an iconic building in Columbus, featuring blazed bricks from Claycraft, Italianate-like arches over its entrances, and several anchors. Its use began to slow down with the demand in mall space decreasing, and Lazarus merging with Macy's in 2005. The building was used by Macy's for a brief period, but it would be left vacant up until May 2021.

The shopping center around Lazarus was demolished about a decade ago for a new shopping plaza, and Kroger bought the Lazarus site with the intent to develop it for a new use. These plans sat in Board of Zoning and Development red tape for years until Kroger sold the lot to another developer. On May 6, 2021, a notice of demolition was signed by Upper Arlington, where the site will finally receive the development it deserves. A large complex of buildings including a senior building and community center are among the tenants taking up this space. Unlike when Macy's took over the property and as history tells, Lazarus will not be making a return.
