The T-72 was designed to be a lower cost complement to the T-64, due to its high contest and reliability issues. It was created by a rivaling design bureau at Uralvagonzavod. The T-72 entered service in ~1973, becoming the second most mass produced tank after the T-54/55 with 25,000+ made. Many variants of it have been made by many operators around the world, it is also the basis for many vehicles such ARVs, bridge layers, BMPT Terminator, and even APCs.


T-72 Ural
Initial production from 1973, fitted with 125mm main gun, autoloader, and lacks composite armor. It was exported to eastern bloc/soviet allied countries as the T-72M. Often similar with "gill" plates similar to the T-64

T-72 Ural 1
Improved production model from ~1977, fitted with turret composite armor, can be identified by turret cheek armor bulge where additional armor is installed

T-72A
Major modernization of T-72 Ural/Ural 1 in 1979, fitted with new composite armor package, tucha smoke dispensers, as well as numerous other improvements. Later fitted with explosive reactive armor as T-72AV. Modernized export T-72M designated T-72M1, which is roughly equivalent to the soviet T-72A
