Want a fresh new challenge in your survival worlds?

Rego's Overhauled Illagers (known as "Smart Patrols" in the pack files) reworks the spawn mechanics and behavior of Illagers, improving upon the existing Pillager Patrols in the vanilla game and modifying their A.I. to be much more dynamic in nature.

Download the .zip and you will find the main pack as well as an extension that adds custom items and loot tables!

Main Pack Features
  • 30+ patrol varieties.
  • New abilities for each Illager variant.
  • Implementation of the Illusioner.
  • Scaling difficulty: As time passes, the patrols become stronger!
  • Adapting behavior: As you become stronger and accustomed to fighting them, so will they!
  • Dynamic interactions: Make (temporary) peace, or become their prime target!
  • Shield Parrying: Time your blocking against a Pillager/Vindicator/Ravager's melee attack and stun them for a brief period!
  • New spawn mechanics: Patrols will populate the world, even in the daytime; frequency of spawns will change depending on a number of variables, some of which are player-controlled.
  • Illager Wars: If you feel that your rivalry isn't personal enough for you, start a war! Enable the extension data pack to gain special rewards for killing Illager Commanders.
  • Customizable settings and admin commands; tune the data pack to your preferences!
  • 50 new advancements.
  • Trophies; collect their banners, heads, and other loot to intimidate, or for bragging rights!
  • Fully compatible with multiplayer; just install the pack into the datapack folder of your world and you're all set!

Important Notes - Please Read!!!

Additional Resources

Found on this page is a resource pack that I strongly recommend you use while running this data pack. As of the full-release patch (11/19/2023), this resource pack utilizes Random Entities and Custom Entity Models. As such, Optifine or any mod that adds these features standalone is required if you would like to see all of the pack's modifications. Without these mods installed, Illagers will not spawn with randomized appearances, and due to the core data pack's Navigation Assistance mechanic for custom Illager navigation, you may also see flashes of Wandering Traders appear and vanish in combat; however, the rest of the pack will still work.

As you've read already, the .zip file also contains an extension to the main data pack. This adds custom items and enchantments that function as rewards for exploring and hunting down patrols. Some of these new items are dropped by the Illagers upon death; many of them are found within Pillager Outposts and Woodland Mansions. For a list of features in this extension, see the bottom of this page.

Please note that you must have the main pack running in order to run the extension; the extension will not work standalone.

Performance

As development of this project continues, there will be changes made to optimize performance for this somewhat resource-intensive data pack. When running the main data pack, there are heaps of commands running every tick; it can climb up to the hundreds when there are patrols actively roaming the world. These commands are necessary for the patrols to display their enhanced behavior. Consequently, you may need a pretty decent computer to run the pack. If you are hosting this in multiplayer, having an excellent connection and server would be ideal.

How The Main Pack Affects Vanilla

The goal of this pack is to give survival MInecraft a different experience, one that keeps you on your toes and where you are never truly safe from the Illagers, even if you think you might have formed an alliance. As such, the game flow can vary from feeling relatively peaceful to nonstop (albeit controlled!) action. With this comes some changes to a few Vanilla gameplay mechanics:

- Pillager Patrols have been completely replaced. The new patrols do not carry Ominous Banners, which means killing their leaders will not grant Bad Omen.
- Bad Omen is instead gained when a Patrol Leader (which can be identified by their unique banner designs) retreats from the player once they have either 1) Traded with a villager; 2) Slept in a bed within a village's boundaries; 3) Defeated an Illager within a village's boundaries. Allowing a leader to retreat while having a Bad Omen effect will increment its level, all the way up to level V.
- By default, Wandering Traders will be disabled, and instead they are replaced with a new Wandering Pillager. This can be changed in the datapack's settings. You can access the settings from the menu that loads into the chat each time you log into your world; you can also display the menu anytime by executing the command, /trigger help. (Note: You will need OP permissions to change settings. In SP, you can grant yourself this permission by opening your world to LAN, then configuring cheats to "allowed.")
-
Raids still work and their mechanics are so far unchanged. However, because of the Illagers' new combat AI, raid farms may break.

- Illagers can cause mild griefing by building effigies at your base. This can be disabled in the settings menu.
- Illagers will periodically place banners near natural or player-made villages. This can also be disabled in the settings menu.

So what does the extension do?
Glad you asked! The primary purpose of the extension is to add an incentive for exploring and hunting down patrols. As the Illagers will populate your world and they are rather curious in nature, you will at one point or another have to kill them. They will remember any hostile encounters and may send additional patrols to your base. With time, you may kill dozens, maybe hundreds of Illagers. To ensure the task doesn't feel like a chore and instead feels rewarding, this add-on to the main pack adds the following:

- A new Skull Bomb throwable. Crafted using a skeleton skull and one block of TNT, this new item acts as a throwable time bomb. Amass a collection of skulls by smelting the heads of fallen Illagers - no need for a Charged Creeper powered head farm!
- A new item series called Charms, which grant the user special abilities and cannot be crafted. So far, they are divided into Uncommon and Rare tiers.
- A new item series of Incense has been added in update 1.1.0. Explore Pillager Outposts or barter with Witches to build a supply of the base ingredient, Incense Base. From there, forage flowers or experiment with certain rare mob drops to create Powdered Incense, and use your creation with a lit Illager effigy to construct an early-game beacon! For full details, see the patch notes for 1.1.0.
- New enchantment: Velocity. Comprising three levels, this Crossbow enchantment increases the speed (and thereby, increases damage) of your arrows. This is obtainable from Pillagers, which will begin spawning with Velocity Crossbows after beating the game (i.e. seeing the credits) when Endgame Patrols are enabled, or when the player acquires a strong enough set of armor.
- New enchantment: Summon. This is a goat horn enchantment only obtainable from Illager Leaders or Pillager Outposts. When a horn enchanted with Summon is used, all sitting pets within a radius will automatically stand; its intended use is for calling wolves to aid you in combat, but this also works for cats and parrots. Each level increases the effective radius, with level IV being the highest at 52 blocks.

- New enchantment: Boon. This is a goat horn enchantment only obtainable from Illager Leaders or Pillager Outposts. When a horn enchanted with Boon is used, all wolves, cats, parrots, and villagers within a small radius will begin regenerating health. Each level increases the effectiveness of the regen, with level III being the strongest.
- New enchantment: Resonance. This is a goat horn enchantment only obtainable from Illager Leaders or Pillager Outposts. When a horn enchanted with Resonance is used, all Illagers within a 32/64/128 block radius, depending on level, will be highlighted.

Moreover, I believe many of us can agree on one thing: Woodland Mansions in the vanilla game have underwhelming loot. Prior to the addition of Illager raids, they were the only place to find Totems of Undying; now that these are renewable, there isn't much point in visiting these rare structures. For such an enormous structure potentially rich with lore implications, it is a shame that mansions are seldom sought after. Because of this, I took the liberty of making a couple of tweaks: Woodland Mansions not only have better loot, but they are now home to four new exclusive enchantments and three Rare Charms. With these additions, the trouble of finding and fighting through a mansion will hopefully be worthwhile. More items are planned to be added in the future, so stay tuned!

Known Issues
No data pack is perfect, and as such there will always be bugs in each version. Here is a list of (currently) known ones:

- Lead Illagers offering truces to the player may sometimes place their interactable banner in a weird manner.
- Ravagers can completely phase through players while dashing if they are directly in front of the ravager and standing still.
- Lead Vindicators may still attack players after offering a truce.

- Witches can throw splash potions while using custom navigation or knocked down (fixed in 1.1!)
- Witches can drink potions while incapacitated or using a goat horn (fixed in 1.1!)
- Evokers will redirect their fire cast spell onto the nearest Villager/Iron Golem, regardless of for whom it was aiming (fixed in 1.1!)
- Evoker Fangs summoned during an Evoker's posthumous attack do not conform to elevation changes (fixed in full release patch!)
- Undead mobs permanently lose hostility when a nearby Illager uses custom navigation (fixed in full release patch!)
- Pillagers can occasionally fire two arrows at once (fixed in full release patch!)
- Interaction entities occasionally fail to despawn (fixed in full release patch!)
- Patrols can spawn in Mushroom Fields (fixed in full release patch!)
- Gamerules doTraderSpawning and disableRaids reset to their default configurations each time the world is reloaded (fixed in full release patch!)
- Fear responses toward players wearing Illager heads is very inconsistent/ineffective (fixed in 0.6!)
- Patrol Leaders may sometimes never switch back to their weapon after using a goat horn (fixed in 0.6!)
- Players may not be able to immediately give items to surrendered Patrol Leaders (fixed in 0.6!)
- (Extension) Whisperer Allays carrying XP orbs drop placeholder items when despawning after hearing a note block (fixed in 0.6!)
- Melee hits against Illagers may not register if it decides to roll and use custom pathfinding at the same time (the roll will protect it from the attack, yet the Illager will not get launched)
(fixed in 0.5!)
- Illagers can roll and dodge in water (fixed in 0.4.2!)
- Pillager Leaders lose their offhand items after using their goat horn (fixed in 0.4.2!)
- Trajectory of firework rockets fired by Pillagers is misaligned
(fixed in 0.4.2!)

- Pillagers can shoot at targets behind them (fixed in 0.4.2!)
- Pillagers can occasionally fire two arrows at once (fixed in 0.4.2!)
- Shooting a Skull Bomb with a Whisperer Bow will cause the explosive to detonate instantly

- Rolls can sometimes trigger without launching the Illager, yet the maneuver still gives it I-frames
- Patrols may rarely spawn too close to the player. This has only been observed to happen near large bodies of water (rivers, oceans, etc.)
- Hurting a Vindicator charging its lunge will not cancel it
- Witches do not spawn in Witch Huts
- Illagers occasionally have trouble getting out of water
- Illagers tend to navigate to world spawn when missing their target destination
- (Extension) Whisperer Allays may occasionally drop their placeholder items
- Some Illagers spawn with 16 instead of 20 HP
- Surrendered Illagers can become hostile again
- Vindicators will always gloat when hitting a successful lunge attack; this is unintended behavior
- Burning Illagers will become extinguished when their Navigator takes damage that doesn't set them on fire
- Illagers can roll while burning, poisoned, or withering away; this is an issue of consistency

Planned Changes
For the next content patch:

- Elemental Illagers or Elite Illagers.
- Crit variants for all Illager types, as well as balance changes surrounding them.
- Passive, stackable charms.

In the foreseeable future:

- Custom structures.

- Boss Illagers in village raids.
- More Illager model/texture variants.

Still on the drawing board:

- A new datapack extension that adds new Evoker and Witch variants; the sky is the limit when one boasts magical abilities.

- A new patrol type whose purpose is to fit Illagers into the domain of archaeology.

Constructive feedback and suggestions are always welcome. The pack will continue to receive updates down the line, so things are bound to change.

Happy Pillaging!

I have a question regarding the tipping of the serrated sword! Have you thought of perhaps adding durability for the tipped effect, and maybe a nerf of the damage to iron sword tier? As one could have a near permanent potion effect along with almost identical damage stats to a netherite sword if max enchanted which could make the aforementioned weapon obsolete.

I unfortunately haven't had time to check out the new update content so I say this after a cursory glance at the changelog. Hopefully you have already thought of the balancing, and made ample changes to its mechanics to account for endgame potential?

Scapperanno? Smetteranno di attaccare?
4. Poi vorrei sapere come funzionano le illager wars, quindi come funziona una guerra

Is there a way to prevent surrendured illagers from despawning if I want to keep some around for a build or something similar?

Could vindicators somehow fly their axes to do ranged attack? That's awfully cool as I've always been imagining

Are there any consistent ways to make illagers fear you or atleast increase the likelihood, and if there is a way to stack these ways for fun.

Hi Redknives, unfortunately there isn't, and I don't plan on making Illager responses exploitable. The best way to scare off a patrol that I can think of is to focus and slay the patrol leader; this has a fair chance of causing the rest of the group to retreat, but more often than not, you'll end up further aggravating them.

Alternatively, wearing an Illager's head can ward you from Illagers for a while, but they will eventually conquer their fear and begin attacking; the same applies for armor stands wearing heads.

So is there any actual use for me sticking their heads on armour stands outside my village wall as effigies to ward them off?

Also I am a bit confused by how you are meant to currently trade with the illagers, since in my experience even with low aggro going up to them to toss them or give them stuff can end up in a fight, but they also dont seems to try and move towards potential trade itrms you throw near them? If possible I wish this could be addressed or changed in some meaningful way
