I'm afraid this post may not be approved by moderators because it's about Minecraft: Legends and not about Minecraft itself, or by this long text that one may think of as spam, but believe me, I spent about 2 hours writing this.
Who, or what are the Hosts?
We see them in Minecraft: Legends as godlike beings who teleport us to the past (?) in order to fight back piglin invaders. There are three of them: Action, Knowledge and Foresight, each representing one value of a Minecraft player. To be honest, they are kind of... pathetic. No, no, I love their designs (especially Action, which quite resembles a Redstone Monstrosity), but look at their behavior. They claim to shape an entire dimension, yet they do nothing to protect it. Even Action herself (?), which represents actually doing something physical, chills out with her siblings (?) in Host dimension. And guess what happens when we fully fend off the invasion? They G O T O S O M E O T H E R U N I V E R S E S like nothing happened. They just casually abandon their creations for our hero. A god and a hero - those are two different things!
Here is everything we know about the Hosts (taken from Fandom Minecraft wiki):
FORESIGHT – "The wisest of the Hosts, Foresight has insight into
what might come to pass. They always see several possibilities, and can't be sure which one will happen. Because of this, they are cautious and will always give much thought before taking decisive action."
Excuse me? A god that ISN'T SURE? Of course, we could have an Ancient Greek Pantheon situation where gods behave just like humans. But a Host, a literal ORACLE. Not knowing what to do. We need some REAL help, not some vision cutscenes that you aren't even 100% sure of.
KNOWLEDGE – "Small in size but immeasurable in intelligence, Knowledge created the powerful tools you have at your disposal — the Legendary Lute, the Banner of Courage, and the Lantern of Creation. Knowledge believes that mastering these tools will be the key to saving the Overworld."
The tiniest of them all, a literal crafting table, yet does more action than Action herself. He (?) actually made those items we get at the start of the game. He is most responsible and ACTUALLY wisest of the Hosts. Even he knows less than Foresight, the informations we get from him are always 100% real and help us throughout our journey.
ACTION – "Action is the most outspoken Host and often speaks of their care and love for all being in the Overworld. Softly spoken and young at heart, Action can sometimes be impatient and show emotion before the other Hosts."
Ah yes, Action. In-game, in Polish language, there is written that Action is youngest of the Hosts. That implies that Hosts were popping into existence one by one, and Action was the last of them. I love her design the most out of the three, but like I said earlier, paradoxally she doesn't take ANY action, just reacting to the situation more than the rest. But heart of gold diamond is a valuable trait.
Now we get crazy and wild with all the theories. One doesn't exclude another.
1. Bad Parenting "fix"
This theory is more realistic than the second one. It all happens in the Missing Era, a time between actions of Minecraft: Legends and vanilla Minecraft, where events like mass extinction (fossils and sniffers), beginning of the villager civil war and building some of the structures happened. In tutorial, we are in an unknown (probably Host) dimension. I payed close attention to the surroundings and I was shocked: everything was made of prismarine! The only place in two other (as of January 2024) games that have prismarine are ocean monuments. That means that the ocean monuments could be bases of wells from MCL (village wells, player-built wells, maybe even Well of Fate itself!). And compare Foresight and guardians: They both live in prismarine and have their eyes as most characteristic trait. Maybe Foresight created guardians? Aand the ancient cities. Those are also interesting. Look at the portal in the center. This portal strongly resembles Action's head. This was probably a prototype to the Host dimension. So here's the plot: Whoever, or whatever built ancient cities, tried to resummon the Hosts because of the chaos around. Any attempts with well bases/ocean monuments were unsuccesful, so there was an another try, with reinforced deepslate. I don't know where you get those blocks and how to activate the portal, but the creator(s) succeeded and Overworld and Host dimensions were connected again. But the Hosts weren't happy. Remember Action, the most emotional of the 3 (or 4, I will explain later)? Whatever it was, that their peace was disturbed or the tragedies that happened during their absence that could've been prevented by them, Action was broken, desperate and everything else. In her sorrow, she created the skulk, which created the warden, and those things wiped out whoever or whatever lived in ancient cities. Just look at the warden. It is very similar to Action: They are both bulky, strong, and overreacting. In fact, they are so similar I made a skin for Warden resembling my favourite Host. Now the only one left is Knowledge. We don't have anything with strong arguments to fully agree on, but we can think of allays. Each gift resembles a Host that directly gives it to our character in Minecraft: Legends. Knowledge give us the Legendary Lute. What does it do? Summons allays. You get the point; Knowledge created allays.
2. 4th Host
Now we're getting crazy. This theory is hardly believable, but I decided to put it here anyway because I made it up while trying to sleep after watching other theories on YouTube. We all wonder what is the Orb (Cube) of Dominance, and where it came from. As Fandom Minecraft wiki says, "Long before the events of Minecraft Dungeons, the Orb of Dominance emerged from a portal that led from an "endless void between worlds" into the Overworld". "Endless void" is the End. But what was before? We know it comes from the forgotten by vanilla Minecraft developers dimensions, but how it came to be. Perhaps the void isn't only between worlds, but also between whole universes? Here I lose your respect by adding a dumb "crossover" with The Amazing Digital Circus. Glitch and Mojang have nothing in common, but after a closer look, we see some resemblances, which I will FINALLY explain. There is a missing Host. Yes, you see my text right. And it's name is Ender. Let's have our look at the Hosts and Heart of Ender in-games. In MCL, at the center of the world where Well of Fate is, we can see the Hosts wandering around. They're sparkling, because they're a deity that isn't in their home dimension. Guess what? Heart of Ender does that too! And look at faces of the Hosts: they have 1, 2, and 4 eyes. Where is the third one? That's right, it was the Ender. Now for the TADC part of the story. Both voids (TADC and MC) have bad effects on the player. There is a possibility that the whole Minecraft universe is also digital, just another app, another view. Both voids may be the same. And the concept of abstraction; when a character goes totally insane, it goes though this process (we don't know if it's painful or not, we will see that in future episodes of the show) and it cannot be undone. The abstracted have a lot of eyes on their glitchy quadrupedal bodies, so does Vengeful Heart of Ender. Endermen in vanilla Minecraft say three sentences that are understandable in English: "Hey.", "What's up?" and "Look for the Eye." The last one is intriguing. The Eye? The End has a weird "obsession" with eyes, they're everywhere! But in that thought, the enderman talks about one eye that is important. Who in the Digital Circus (excluding the abstracted) has many eyes? Caine, of course! Upon creation of both universes (that may also imply that Minecraft Java Edition 3D Shareware v1.34 [Minecraft's 2019 April Fools version] would be canon), Caine was putting his eyes all over the place, when suddenly, he saw a hole that wasn't patched. At first, his AI protocol taught him to immediately patch the glitch hole, but curiosity won and he sent the eye. As soon as the eye surpassed the seam between the programs, connection was lost, so Caine fixed the hole and forgot about the incident, but felt weaker because the eye was a part of him and some powers stayed there, never to return to their original owner. And we all know what evolution does to eyes in dark places. Back to Minecraft, later on, the Hosts also saw an unpatched hole on their side. Ender was eager to explore. But he coudn't find a way out after a while. He was stuck for a long time. Hope turned into insanity, and then to abstraction. At the moment he was going to fully abstract, he saw a lost "eye". The power was still there, and two became one. In the programable space, Ender created a land of his own, the End. Once a loving Host, now an evil, half-abstract half-independent abomination saw from aside the beautiful Overworld and mystic Nether. Jealousy didn't have an End (I know, not funny). In the Missing Era, Ender and some Endermen somehow got to the Overworld. Endermen did whatever they wanted, while Orb of Dominance (the self-proclaimed title Ender gave himself after the discovery of orb shapeshifting) flew to a cave and waited for vessels.
Woah, that was WILD. What do you think about the main question? I was probably one of fist people to have that kind of theories in mind. Because it's 17th December 2023, I wish you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

1. Backstory of the Hosts, prismarine and few others
2. Everything ender have abstracted Ender Host as their LUCA (term used in evolution, it stands for Last Universal Common Ancestor)
3. Both!
I'm glad someone likes my theories and they aren't that useless... :)
