Hello everyone, and welcome to a new blog!
I have been watching the server tab lately, and noticed many interesting new server types appearing. From new RPG to completely new genres, they are being created by creative PMCers. Considering Minecraft isn't too old, this is wonderful! When I first joined Minecraft back in v1.5 Beta (I know, I am not a true alphanian), all I remember were Survival/Vanilla servers. Now, just a little more than a year later, we have so many choices!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ First of all, Mojang instituted Creative Mode into Minecraft. This opened up a new genre: the Creative server. Of course, there were possibly some before this time, with people using Essentials /item command and Zombe's fly mod, but the Creative Mode made it easier to access desired blocks and for servers to regulate who was allowed to use it or not. One-click breaking enabled changes to be made more quickly, and the flight was just fast enough to provide an excellent way to move around builds easily. People do still continue to use Zombe Fly on many Creative servers since it provides a faster way to get around.
~ Brought in during the recent v1.3, Adventure Mode allows servers to make controlled PvP-only areas perfect for Survival Games (another relatively new server genre) and anti-grief Adventure maps.
~ New genres are created by Minecraft players all the time. Some base their server on movies, other games, or simply come up with their own idea. Others see a cool new map created by somebody and decide to make a server genre out of it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ The first major genre to come to mind after Survival/Creative is RPG, which might have even been around since before I started Minecraft. People have been doing RPG game-play for a long time: Dungeons & Dragons, real-life scenarios, MMORPGs (such as World of Warcraft, FusionFall, etc.), and more. This being ported to Minecraft Multiplayer comes as no surprise. (I currently play on a great MCMRPG, A'Therys Ascended). Most RPG servers have created their own lore, terrain, and major cities/towns. As a genre, they are possibly the hardest to create well, and the ones that are good are very good.
~ Another that comes to mind are prison servers. Kicked off by one of the best, MC-Convicted.org, they are big on PvP and small on creativity (except when it comes to the admins, who have to create a fun environment to keep people playing). They are also very social, since there isn't much else to do between server events. This also makes them hard to run, since the owner/admins have to keep people entertained most of the time. But they were a great idea, and continue to bring in loads of players.
~ One that we all know: Survival Games servers. Started mostly when Team Vareide posted the first Survival Games map (based on the popular book/movie The Hunger Games), they are fun to play and bring people back time and time again to try and win. New maps are created all the time, major ones by Team Vareide.
~ Recently, I had the honor to become a Mod on The Battle for Conwy Castle, a relatively new server type created by Rockslide. Another that brings people back to play again and again, it is based on Capture the Flag, but with custom plugins made specifically for the server. Flags of the opposing team lower as you 'capture' them, there are working catapults that launch stones/TnT at the enemy, and portcullises/drawbridges that function as you would expect.
~ A very common type of server is one based on a popular map. Take Hypixel's work for example: almost all his newer maps have been made into servers that made the Server pop. reel. At one point, almost all the pop. reel servers were MCTF2: Dustbowl maps, some with custom plugins. The Walls also spurred a ton of servers into creation. However, these servers usually don't last, and get old after some time of fame.
Team Vareide's Survival Games map, as I mentioned before, is another example of this. That, in turn, was influenced by the movie.
~ Servers based on other games are not that widely spread, but are usually interesting to see when incorporated into Minecraft. I saw a FarmVille-like server the other day on the Server popular reel where you start as a lowly farmer and work your way up.

What's up next for server genres? Well, most definitely servers based on other people's maps. Anything Hypixel makes that's made for multiplayer will almost certainly make its way to a server.
Come up with your own idea! :D Think of something in real life that would be cool on a server. Recently, I thought of making a server based on running a hotel, but didn't have the resources to make custom plugins for it. Custom plugins are the groundwork for a great new server genre.
Maybe your idea will be the next Survival Games. Hard work and time are necessary to creating an amazing server, along with teamwork.
MC-Multiplyer has definitely come a long way since Vanilla.
