My feet are slamming against the cool pavement. Run. My pulse is throbbing in my ears. Run. My eyes are darting everywhere but in front of me. Run. My legs are slowing down. Keep running.
I hear it's gnarled breath behind me, searching for me, even though I left him behind miles ago. Maybe towns. I've been running for days. Soon enough I'll have to find another body to replace my energy. I've ditched about 5 meatsuits in 8 hours. I was lucky enough to get an Olympic runner two towns back.
Keep running. The smell of flesh drowns my senses. Just in time. I follow the sweet stench of human skin and soon enough find myself changing into a little girl's body. I wish I didnt have to do this.
My brain pounds against the little girl's skull, adjusting itself. This is the worst part. Everything this little girl has ever seen flashes before me like pages being swiftly flipped through. But I see it all. Everytime I have to do this, I feel myself rotting. When did it start? I can't even remember the first time.
My legs crumble underneath me. I clutch my head as the memories continue passing. Then it stops. The breath, the pounding, the memories. I lay numb on the floor. When I pictured this moment, I thought it would be relief that washed over me. Wrong. I feel nothing but terror as the silence grows louder.
For weeks, all I heard was pounding, breathing, screaming. I had become use to it. It was almost comforting, in a sense. Now all I hear is white noise. A faint ringing in my ears is all I have to remind me of the constant sounds that had followed me for the past weeks.
I don't know where it is. I will never know if its coming. I can't keep running. I can't keep running.
I slowly stand up. The sky above me is clear all except for the moon, hung like a diamond in midair. It gives off an eerie, luminescent glow. For the first time, I take in the scene around me. Im in the middle of what appears to be a main street, or perhaps a town square, full of little shops. In the middle, a big oaktree is planted. A wrap around fountain surrounds the tree, quietly spilling water.
I haven't heard a sound this calming in what seems like ages, yet I still feel myself growing mad. It wants me to stop running. It wants me to think it has ended. But i know better.
It will never end.
