This devblog we're very excited to be showing off our latest innovation. The ravager now has a custom Optifine model that turns it into a Carthaginian war elephant!

Please note that what you see is considered work-in-progress and many things you see here will be subject to future changes!

For a long time we were stumped on creating Custom Entity Models (CEM) which are possible through Optifine, but we finally dedicated the time to it and got it figured out. No roleplay server set during the Punic Wars would be complete without war elephants! It's complete with the mahout box and blanket, too. The trick of getting an enemy to ride the elephant is if the elephant is spawned in with two other mobs riding on top of it, the top mob perfectly sits inside the box. Hopefully in a future devblog we'll have all the player models ready for enemy mobs and you can see the complete set. PvE events will be a central feature of roleplay combat on Romecraft: Italia, and this really helps take it to another level of immersion!

Just to avoid any confusion, it should be mentioned that the players shown in these pictures are just accounts and alts of the developers. The servers not actually open yet.

Next up we have the gladiators. If our server wasn't complete without war elephants, then surely no Roman roleplay server would be complete without gladiators. We've got plenty more textures/models planned for gladiators, so this is by no means the completed set. Seen below are the Murmillo and early Samnite classes of gladiators. Gladiators will be a central feature of this server, with plenty of RP events centered around gladiatorial games with systems for betting and playing as a gladiator in the games. Contrary to popular belief, gladiators did not die in the arena anywhere near as much as people think, and so we hope to make being a gladiator a viable career choice on this server.

Please be aware that the swastika symbol is used HISTORICALLY here in the name of historical authenticity and realism, and had an entirely different meaning during ancient times. It was commonly used as a symbol of the sun, peace, and prosperity long before it was adopted as a political/hate symbol in modern times. It was a popular symbol among both the Romans and the Samnite peoples of ancient Italy.

So far we've done a custom model for the padded arm guard and the Murmillo helmet. You can see our 3D shields and swords here too, of course. We've also got some custom gladiator armor like the greaves, loincloth and straps.

Here you can see the 3D bow we've recently made. We actually publicly released this as an add-on pack not too long ago which you can download and try out for yourself here. Bows will be commonly used by hunters, mercenaries, and levies that might need to be raised in dire times for Capua.

We also did models for lanterns, hanging and on the ground.

And finally, some progress pics on the buildings of Capua.

Well, that's all for now. Apologies for us taking a little longer on this one, and everything still didn't make it in but that just means we'll have more for next time. Stay turned on our PMC page and on our website at https://www.antiquaitalia.org/

All of this is so amazing! Any chance to share the gladiator armor and helmet? I always try to make my character looks like a gladiator, but what you did here is just perfect

All of the armor and weapons will be released along with the Romecraft Italia resource pack, as well as separately in its own addon pack for those who wish to use it with other resource packs. The date for this release is still TBD, and it will come along when the associated server is nearing completion.

The only mod involved in this project is optifine, the rest is all resource pack magic :)
as the project moves along we will be posting small addon packs primarily for other resource pack artists to use in their own packs, but they can also be used with the default Mojang textures for singleplayer purposes. When our project is finished, we will be posting the resource pack on our PMC page and it will be required to play on our future server.
