People lie for many reasons, on the internet its normally just to look better. You can normally tell if somebody isn't being honest. We'll use gender as an example.
"heyyy im a gurl"
Seems legit? Maybe, although you have to ask, why did that person just state their gender. In situations like that its for attention or so it seems.
The same goes for people who steal content and claim it as their own. They just want the rewards or to look like they made something good. Because this is the internet, you can have any facade you want, be it real or fake.
"Girls want an honest guy, guys lie
Guys want a pretty girl, girls wear make up"
False facades everywhere! Even in real life. The moral of the story is that people lie for what they believe to be their own benefit. Granted, there are times when you think you're going the correct thing or you think its ok. Normally, Not telling the truth only benefits in the short term. Believe me, I always used to try and fake sick to go home or to get out of sports at school. It was hard keeping track of my medical records. :P
Now, I think that's a bit better than just a reply in a comment. ^-^

To see the truth behind the lies is easy. You can detect someone's blatant mistruths and falsehoods, but often the case you need to understand why they did it in the first place. Are they not confident in their own abilities that they have to claim someone else work as theirs? Are they lying for someone out of loyalty or to protect? Or do we simply think we're too awesome for our own good?
The basic fundamental of lying is essentially to make another person or a group of persons into believing something contrary to what they currently believe in. For example, I know that many skinners here hate Skindex, yet to my right, I see it's link in the MC Sites & Friends list. Some can be quite aghast at that, but I see the reasoning behind it. As well as establishing a hub network of MC related sites, it's also establishing a certain level of traffic, which quite possibly nets them a fair amount of cash to continue to run their free services to the public.
Now I just made you believe that with a rational explanation, didn't I? Real truth? I have no idea, it could be ANYTHING :P
We lie to leave an impression upon people. Good and bad is irrelevant, but as long as you make them believe what you want them to believe, then falsehood becomes a truth in their eyes and in turn those that they impress the 'facts' upon.
