For the “A Life of Steve” blog contest for PMC

“Father, have you ever wondered what’s on the other side of the river?” The young boy said. The father looked up from his work. “I’ve certainly had my share of ideas, Steve.” Steve nodded, and looked out the window again. He stared longingly at the river. Father noticed. “Now, Steve. Remember how you’ve always wanted to go kayaking?” Steve brightened up. “Yes, of course!” Father smiled. “Well, today’s your lucky day. I decided you were old enough.” Steve was very excited. “Thank you, daddy! Thank you!” Father’s smile widened. “Now, son, let’s go get you on a kayak.”

“Wake up.” The woman slowly woke up from her deep sleep. The room she laid in was that of a hospital - the white walls, the plain décor, and of course the equipment said it all. She held up a hand in front of her face. “Where am I?” she moaned.

She realized now that there were 3 men around her hospital bed, all staring at her behind medical eyeglasses. “You are in room 794 in hall A of floor 15, at the National Hospital,” One of the men said. The woman knew she was hospitalized, but for what? One of the men saw her confusion. “You’re here because you’re suffering of amnesia, you were found… at…. Uh… well, it’s not important. What is important is that we get your memory intact again. You see, it’s a very high priority here in Minecraftia.” The woman nodded. “I see… We should get started, then.” The man smiled. “Indeed.”

The blocky sun reached its post at the middle of the sky, marking noon. Steve and his father had arrived at the kayaking shed, getting ready to go.

“Now, son. You remember everything I’ve taught you?” Steve jumped up and down. “Yes, dad, yes!” “Alright, let’s get in our kayak.” They both hopped into the Helmson Estate kayak and began to head down the river.

It was about halfway down that Steve thought of an important question. “Dad?” He asked. His father turned at him. “Yes, son?” Steve looked up at his face. So mature, so smooth and masculine with a touch of cruelty in it. He gulped. “You’ve seen it, father. What’s really on the other side of the river?” His father looked off, clearly hesitant of answering this question. “Things you could never imagine, Steve. The truth, let’s leave it at that.” Steve thought to himself for a moment. I wonder if I could ever go there, he thought. He looked at his father and smiled. That was the last moment he would see his father for the next 10 years. Out from the forest came a massive torrent of fire, burning trees and everything else in its path. His father’s eyes widened. “He’s come.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Let’s start with some pictures.” The man said. He produced a folder which contained 5 photographs. He pulled out the first one. On it was a two-sided picture; on one, there was a smooth and detailed world. On the other, there was a blocky and simple world, the world of Minecraftia. The man pulled in a breath. “Can you discern the difference between these two photographs?” The woman winced. She pointed at the blocky one. “That one’s Minecraftia,” She said. “And that one’s…” The man smiled a bit. No one gets that question right. He leaned in a bit. “What if I told you that everything I said, everything you and every single every other person in Minecraftia was a file? That every move you make is being determined by someone writing files?”

The woman sat back, in awe. “And what if I told you that this is the 5th time we’ve repopulated this place, and that soon we will all be recoded yet again to a being known as The Annihilator, known to some as the Ender Dragon. He’s been slain before, but he never dies…” The man paused. “I apologize. This is a lot to take in. But let me show you another picture. And explain one more thing. That smooth world? That’s what we used to be. Before the dragon. Here’s the next picture.” He pulled out the next photo. She looked at it. In it, there was a young man wearing a blue t-shirt and a pair of worn jeans. He looked so much older than he was. “Do you recognize this man?” He asked.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Steve woke up, the world was on fire. There were trees strewn about everywhere, and plumes of flame erupting from the ground. His dad was nowhere in sight. “Dad?!” He screamed. He had washed up on the other side of the river. He managed to get up, he wasn’t hurt too badly other than a few scrapes and bruises here and there. “Dad?!” He screamed again. He began to cry, all the time looking around.

After what felt like hours walking around in the Armageddon, he stumbled across something strange. It was some sort of cave, with a stone-looking structure in it. “What…” That was all he said before he heard the humming. He turned around, only to see a wave of white light coming towards him, fast. All he said was, “Dad…?”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The woman shook her head. “I don’t believe I do.” The man smiled. He pulled out another image. “And this is a picture of you, correct?” She nodded. “Notice the similarity in your faces?” She froze. “We’re…” “Siblings, yes. His name was Steve. He clearly was not the only one who survived the wipeout.” She started to cry a little a bit. “I thought he was dead… I remember now…” The man hugged her in an attempt to comfort her sobbing. “Do you remember-” The woman cut him off. “The man, yes. The one who tried to kill me. Hero-“ “Herobrine, he went by. But you knew him.” The woman looked confused. “You knew him too well. He was your father.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve woke up in a much blockier world, with no memory whatsoever of what happened. “Where…” He shook his head. He was no longer a sweet child. He was 15 years old. He had been asleep for 8 years. He got up, confused. His survival instincts had already kicked in, and he headed for a tree…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Yes. Steve and I found each other. Herobrine tried to kill us both…” The man stopped her. “And it says here that you hallucinated some sort of… creature?” She nodded. “Yes. It had… 3 heads. It whispered to me, and it had the same empty eyes as Herobrine.” The man looked at her. “We call it the wither effect. And do you remember your name?” She struggled to remember it, but couldn’t. He held up one final image, and she remembered. “Alex. My name is Alex. And we’re all going to die soon.” The man stood up. “Good job, Alex. Welcome back.” Alex looked angry. “And we can’t stop it, can we? The dragon will come, it’ll get me and Steve, I need to see him!” The man stopped. “That can be arranged. And it’s not a waiting game, exactly.” She looked up, puzzled. “Let’s just call it a game of life and blocks.” He left.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve descended deeper into the dungeon. It had been a year since he woke up, and he had been surviving ever since. He had brought with him 12 eyes from fallen endermen, in an attempt to find the dragon. And when he finally came across the room, he got the flashback. All he heard were fragments. “It’ll kill me and Steve.” “He was your father.” “Herobrine.” “Alex.” “Ender Dragon.” And then he heard it. The voices from above. “It’s almost time to reset.” Steve screamed and jumped into the portal to face the dragon.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I suppose it’s time.”

“To reset?”

“Yeah.”

“Just one thing first.”

“Yes?”

“He does the same thing every time, right?”

“Yes.”

“Well, Notch. Let’s add a twist.”

“That is?”

“Minecraft. The public should participate in this. To warn them.”

“It messes with you, no?”

“Yes, but they need to know. The dragon lives.”

“Yes, and see him?”

“Yes, I see the player you mean…”
