All you need is a lighter and some obsidian to make your way to the Nether, Minecraft's notorious underworld dimension. Now, here's an interesting question to ponder on: would it be possible for an actual place just like the Nether to exist in real life?
Now, to start off, I'd like to get one thing straight - rather than being a dimension of its own, the Nether is quite possibly a literal underworld that resides underneath the Overworld, as suggested by its cave-like property, constantly seen magma and unique geography (travelling a block in the Nether is equivalent to travelling eight in the Overworld, which would be the exact situation if one traveled at the core of a planet, and resurfaced above the crust). Would it perhaps be possible for a place like the Nether to exist deep underneath the surface of the earth?
Well, the answer depends on the reader's point of view. If you look at it geographically, then the answer is maybe. As travelling one meter in the Nether is equivalent to traveling eight at the surface, then the Nether would probably be around 5669 km underneath the Overworld's surface - and only 709 km from the planet's core. In other words, it's basically IMPOSSIBLE for a cave composed of weak Netherrack to exist under such huge pressure. On the other hand, there's still one thing - the Nether's inner walls may be composed of Netherrack, but its outer walls are made of practically indestructible bedrock. Of course, bedrock in real life may not be downright INDESTRUCTIBLE, but it's still pretty darn tough. The bedrock may be the key point to allowing a place like the Nether to exist in such conditions. Biologically, though, the answer, obviously, is a big fat NO. The temperature there would be so blazing hot even metals like steel will be liquefied in moments, let alone organic tissues and cells.

As for the mobs of the Nether... Ehh that's a mytery to be. But say the wither skeleton is actually made of charred bones? Even though they are called "Wither Skeletons ", they are actually taller than normal skeletons. This means that it's unlikely that the skeletons were sent to the Nether and withered up like the name suggests.
Back to charged bones. When killing a wither skeleton, you sometimes get a piece of coal. This increases the likelihood of the "charred bones" theory being correct. Now, why the wither affect? First, notice that the wither skeletons use stone swords. Then they powdered them with their charred bone material, along with a bit of poison. In that heat, plus the heat of the stone sword and the hot charred coals and maybe a touch if poison. A wound in the nether sounds bad enough, imagen having that would filled with hot charred ashes! That would explain for the deadly wither effect.
I didn't do any research I was just on my phone and I found this. Seems pretty accurate though.
